East Coast states want to tax drivers’ travel, not their gas
Wa Po ^ | June 25, 2016 | Michael Laris

Delaware, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New Hampshire are proposing pilots to figure out how they might charge motorists a fee for the miles they travel — rather than taxing their gas, as state and federal officials do today.

The I-95 Corridor Coalition, which represents transportation officials from 16 states and the District of Columbia, applied for a federal grant last month to test the idea.

Officials would stitch together the policies and technologies needed to count the miles driven by 50 recruits from each of the four states, including state legislators, transportation officials or other willing guinea pigs. They would send out “faux invoices” monthly. And they would collect the data that legislatures — and the driving public — would require to decide if the change makes sense.

If you drive your car I’ll tax the street

If you walk I’ll talk your feet

I’m the taxman......

Taxing your miles driven means the government can track everywhere you drive and this data will get collected and certainly used for other purposes. For example the number of miles you wish to drive can be restricted by taxing you higher and higher rates or your travel could be simply rationed. Don’t think government tax sensors, which you will have to pay for, won’t also be collecting data where you drive and even how fast. Citizen why are you making trips to the local VFW or gun range? Don’t you know these place are subversive or restricted?

Umm, in Pennsylvania they could easily do it now without tracking. Every time you get your vehicle inspected (annual) the mechanic records the mileage on the vehicle; likewise on your annual registration. They could simply ensure the two are close, and pick one to use for an annual tax.

Right. It’s the electronic tracking that’s the biggest concern here, not the general principle of mileage-based taxation.

not quite. At all. The tracking just adds the insult to the injury. Being taxed for going places is ridiculous.
