Delaware, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New Hampshire are proposing pilots to figure out how they might charge motorists a fee for the miles they travel rather than taxing their gas, as state and federal officials do today.
The I-95 Corridor Coalition, which represents transportation officials from 16 states and the District of Columbia, applied for a federal grant last month to test the idea.
Officials would stitch together the policies and technologies needed to count the miles driven by 50 recruits from each of the four states, including state legislators, transportation officials or other willing guinea pigs. They would send out faux invoices monthly. And they would collect the data that legislatures and the driving public would require to decide if the change makes sense.

They’ll tax both.
“rather than taxing their gas, as state and federal officials do today”
They’ll do both
Restrict yor travel.
By taxing the pumps, they are ALREADY taxing for the mileage driven. I mean, cars use a specific amount of fuel to go places.
This technology can ONLY be achieved through tracking, and I’m not playing that game.
If they wanted to do this they would need to ensure - like, pass a law - that all vehicles in the state are ODB3 equipped and that the trackers in the ECU are enrolled properly.
This will take years to even bring to the table.
I sold my car.
Now I depend on my bicycle.
They’re not going screw me out of more money.
Yes.
It only took two posts to realize that.
In other words they want to tax everything - gas tax AND travel tax. If you give them that they will just back at you in another year or so with even more taxes. Tell them hell no. You’re not going to fund the Agenda 21 BS with your tax $$$ because they will always want more and NEVER be satisfied.
Do you have permission to come into this side of town? Let me see your papers!
This is evil and very troubling. How can they charge people for living. Will they charge for breathing air next? Every politician and bean counter who thought this up needs to be put out of America. Pronto.
> Will they charge for breathing air next?
They already do. It’s called the Affordable Care Act.
Caesar Rodney would be amazed at the shit he rode 70 miles in the rain to ensure wouldn’t happen.
Delaware is the 1st State.
They DO charge for the air you breath, and have for years. It’s on your electric bill if nothing else. Different places call it by different names, but it’s all the result of a clean air act somewhere.
This is what leftists want, right?
FUI95.
“Restrict your travel.’
It could be done with toll roads fairly easily.
Actually it is, in part, the law of unintended consequences.
The state raises the fuel efficiency standards and over time people use less gasoline to achieve the same distance. But, the cost to maintain the road stays the same. Thus by making cars more efficient the state loses money. Then you add electric cars into the mix and you realize that Tesla/Volt/Leaf drivers are actually engaging in tax evasion. Since the cost of taxes on gasoline are between 30% and 50% of the price in most places the state loses lots of money.
If you want to stop these plans ban electric cars or make electric and hybrid car owners pay a yearly tax, based on the number of miles driven that will cover the wear and tear on the roads from driving their “Environmentally Friendly” coal powered car
The CAGW control freaks whould be all too happy to tax and control your respiration.
