American and Russian fighter jets had a tense showdown in the skies above Syria as the Russians dropped bombs on U.S.-backed rebels.
U.S. and Russian fighter jets bloodlessly tangled in the air over Syria on June 16 as the American pilots tried and failed to stop the Russians from bombing U.S.-backed rebels in southern Syria near the border with Jordan.
The aerial close encounter underscores just how chaotic Syrias skies have become as Russia and the U.S.-led coalition work at cross-purposes, each dropping bombs in support of separate factions in the five-year-old civil war. The near-clash also highlights the escalating risk of American and Russian forces actually coming to blows over Syria, potentially sparking a much wider conflict between the worlds leading nuclear powers.
The incident began when at least two twin-engine Su-34 bombers, some of Moscows most advanced warplanes, struck what the Pentagon described as a border garrison housing around 200 U.S.-supported rebels in At Tanf on the Syrian side of the Syria-Jordan border.
The rebels had been conducting counter-ISIL operations in the area, the Pentagon stated on June 18, using an alternative acronym for ISIS.

good one!
Actually it is worse than that!
American foreign policy has gone from stupid (Bush-43) to
TRAITOROUS under Muslim raised Obama.
Very, very dangerous to our country. Hillary the same.
We have taken over by the enemy within.
I give WWIII happening within two months.
When they use the acronym ISIL it has to do with destroying Israel.
we are backing them as proxies to ousr Assad.
Explain what exactly?
Government support of the muslims in Kosovo started this. Russia stayed out but the Clinton policy is where all this started. Muslims have been on the march since they learned that the U.S. will not stop them. Now Russia has decided to stand and fight the muslims against the policies of the U.S.
That's how I read it.
Looks like baraq is going to ramp up confrontations with Russia and then leave the next president holding the bag. Fits his pattern.
yep...... vindictive action meaning he is certain Hillary will lose
What a load of CRAP!
We don’t need to be concerned with ousting Assad.
Millions of Christian Iraqis fled Iraqi to Syria during our war there. Many went to Syria because they knew Assad protected the Christians there.
Assad may not be a good leader in Syria but it can be a lot worse. Assad’s nation was being attacked. He responded. What would happen in the USA if people tried to overthrow the government?
Our governmental leaders seemed to think Assad was a pretty good guy at one time. I guess the propaganda turned against him and then we needed to overthrow him? Where did the need to overthrow Assad come from? Saudi Arabia? The CIA? Obama?
It wasn’t justified for us to overthrow the government of Libya when we did. I don’t believe it is justified for us to support the overthrow of Syria either.
Again, Assad protected the Christians in Syria. Maybe he wasn’t as crazy as some have made him out to be?
I expect all hell to break loose. Riots in our cities, terror attacks on our soil, military fiascoes overseas. Everything. It's not going to be pretty.
Thanks for your input.
Yes Russia is well aware of their southern provinces - potential powder keg...
You're right but our policy has been FUBAR since the Shah was forced to leave Iran. Is Iran better off w/o the Shah? Is Iraq better off w/o Saddam, is Libya better off w/o Kaddaffi? We've screwed up the entire region and destabilized the world...for what?
What people know as Syria is gone. Completely gone. The country is now divided in half.
Been following this the best I can, and it’s Russia/Assad & US/FSA versus Al Qaeda/ISIS/jihadi groups. Wanna-be jihadis and supplies flowing through Turkey, and of course, Turkey doesn’t like the Kurdish FSA.
Yep. We’re destabilizing the world and making it less safe for everyone.
Project for a New American Century (think tank (1997 - 2006) started by Bill Kristol and David Kagan) encouraged regime change in Iraq and Syria. Time is running out to get regime change in Syria. You know the Iraq regime change worked splendidly. (BIG) s/
