"Weve heard for years about the dangers of eating too much fat or salt. But there have never been recommended limits for sugar on Canadian food labels, despite emerging research that suggests the sweet stuff may be making more of us fat and sick. In the fifth estates season premiere, Gillian Findlay digs into the surprising science and the reaction from the food industry to reveal The Secrets of Sugar. Has the sugar industry been hiding an unsavoury truth from consumers?
A small but influential group of medical researchers is stirring up the health debate, linking sugar not just to rising obesity rates but also to a host of diseases including cancer, heart disease and Alzheimers.
We put a family of four on a healthy diet to try to beat their sugar habit and track the surprising results. We talk to leading scientists and their critics. And we ask the food industry why those ingredient labels are far from clear when it comes to how much sugar is really on your plate.
I guess what I mean by no diet is I'm not counting numbers. Fat grams, carbs, calories, I have no idea what my intake is.
I will say I don't feel to be missing out on the foods I love and I seem to have become sensitive to the taste of sugar. Tried a little peanut butter awhile back and it seemed to be gritty with sugar. To syrupy to tolerate.
Oh...and I should say I dropped about 20 lbs 2 years ago at age 63) doing the above (and Pilates)
I have been exercising regularly for 30 years. Age is slowing me, and it is easier to be injured.
I have a friend who is 82, though, and walks fast 4 miles a night. He used to do 4.6.
Great for the 82 year old. There is an older guy in the area that I see jogging quite often. He’s slow, but I see him very often out there. He looks to be in his 80s. Often he waves at passing cars, but sometimes I wave and he doesn’t look up. He must be really into it during those times.

People have to find what works for them. Different strategies work for different people. Metabolisms are different, genetics are different, tastes and proclivities are different.
I am all for what works for you.
But it comes down to what works for you to get the intake down and/or the outgo up.
If switching from carbs to fat and protein work for you, great!
Exercise and cutting down on fat and sugared drinks has worked for me.

I noticed the same effect by cutting back on fat.
A little is fine, but a really fatty food becomes cloying, almost nauseating.
I had plantar issues on a trip that involved lots of hillclimbing, and shoulder issues were forecast by cat scan, so there’s my sge factor. Lo carb and garlic seem to help pain and mobility issues, and my theory is more muscle around the shoulder will help keep it supported. No doctors unless I’m dying.
That’s good. There are many docs like Gary Null who have some good advice on the right things and ways to eat. Like many he will caution against too much sugar but he has a holistic view of it.
“How can do we become healthier as individuals and as a nation, but not have the government dictate what we consume? Health and freedom. I want conservatives to live long and healthy lives.”
It all boils down to making the right choices. The notion that sugar can be bad for you is not new. It can be addictive because it messes with your insulin level and the more you eat, the more you crave.
I don’t have a problem with sugar but I do have addictions and there are few people who don’t. You’re not alone. Find new friends who don’t engage in the behavior you wish to avoid. On the other hand I have ice cream...

My exercise regime is a combination of climbing and running.
Sugar is poison. Humans evolved eating tony amounts of sugar from plants and fruits. Processing radically changed this, with toxic effects, inflammation and diabetes, which was previously unheard of. And high-fructose corn syrup made things even worse.
It’s just like a sole coming off your shoe. High doses of aspirin around the clock, rest and when you have to walk, don’t flex. Walk just as if Elmer’s glue is holding the soles on your feet and you have to be careful to let it set.
Some cultures received a third of their calories from honey and were healthier than we are.
My husband cut out sugar for awhile and lost all his extra weight-he said the best part was that food tasted better. It was as though sugar dulled his taste buds. Probably there was an overgrowth of yeast in his system. He took probiotics and grapefruit seed extract while eliminating sugar.
Sadly, like me, he is off the wagon. Due to a fairly recent job loss, we are both back doing physical labor. He went from teaching to starting his own construction company and I went from being a stay at home mom to waitressing. Talk about a midlife change-but it counts as exercise! He was always active as a coach and doing construction work part time. I, however, chased kids and managed the house. Never sat down but didn’t spend hours at a time walking as fast as I can while carrying heavy pasta dishes. At 42 I have definition in my triceps again :-). I suppose we are working off the really bad effects of sugar!
We all know that what works for weight loss and maintenance is eating primarily lean meat, green vegetables and fruit. Limit starches like potatoes, corn and rice. Eggs and low fat dairy are okay.
But knowing something and following it are two different things.
Have the occasional sweet treat - my weakness is dark chocolate, but a bowl of ice cream is a once or twice a month vice.
Do not keep anything tempting in your house. No chips, no cookies, no ice cream (get ice cream out), no crackers, nothing. Do not go to fast food places unless you can settle for a salad.
Limit alcohol intake to one drink a day or stop drinking altogether is you really want to take off the weight. Alcoholic drinks have a lot of sugar and a lot of calories.
Keeping active also helps. Stay on your feet for as many hours a day as you can.
Try Vionic shoes. My husband has had bouts of severe plantar fasciitis and he swears by those shoes. They have a very pronounced arch support.
Sugar does not make you fat. Empty sugar does. Get all your sugar from fruit, not empty sugar drinks.
The body needs fruit, veggies & water. Quit counting calories.
The highest nutrition fruit & veggie is Watermelon & Spinach. Berries is higher but Watermelon is edible and Walmart has precut chunks. Buy Tupperware food container, 1.5 liter. Drop handful Spinach in, Watermelon on top. No salads. Finger eat leaf at a time, lasts longer.
That is your basic food nutrition plus water.
Eat meat as desired also. Use color theory eg yellow corn veggie, blueberry fruit, as desired. Nuts as desired, Wholefoods, no salt.
The body needs no cooking, no conventional breakfast, no supper. Those are social constructs that homemaker feels good about but makes others fat. Just munch throughout the day.
That is the food part. You will live til 100 years old, and out live everyone you know. :-)
