Vladimir Putin downplayed past comments about Donald Trump and spoke about the presidential election on Friday, adding that he accepted the US is probably the worlds sole superpower.
America is a great power. Today, probably, the only superpower. We accept that, the Russian president said at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. We want to and are ready to work with the United States.
Alluding to US-EU sanctions on Russia in response to its military actions in Ukraine, he continued: The world needs such strong nations, like the US. And we need them. But we dont need them constantly getting mixed up in our affairs, instructing us how to live, preventing Europe from building a relationship with us.
Asked about the presumptive Republican nominee for president, Putin again described Trump as a flamboyant or colorful man, using a Russian word яркий that can be translated with ambiguous connotations, from gaudy to striking to dazzling.
You see, its like I said, Putin told his questioner. Trumps a colorful person. And well, isnt he colorful? Colorful. I didnt make any other kind of characterization about him.
But heres where I will pay close attention, and where I exactly welcome and where on the contrary I dont see anything bad: Mr Trump has declared that hes ready for the full restoration of Russian-American relations. Is there anything bad there? We all welcome this, dont you?

I just did a quick check - Putin doesnt drink or smoke either! It would be nice to have two clear headed leading the world.
Well, yes! :)
But is that really so suspicious, given the state it was in 20 years ago?
Putin knows that demon inside obama and about to enter hillary is out to do him in after its through destabilizing the middle east and sending invading raping Muslim hordes into Europe and the West,
He knows Trump has no such similar interest,
He’s telling us what we want to hear. Russia and China are both superpowers. China more so than Russia.
I am all for good US Russia relations as long as Putin doesn’t go about annexing the forms Soviet states.
I’m sure each will be watching that the other is not holding a knife behind their back.
I swear Clinton will get us into a war with Russia. She’s a corrupt byatch
He sees Trump as the possible American exit from NATO.
I for one welcome that. The UK, France, Germany and Poland can iron out how much of the GNP of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Monaco, Luxembourg and the rest to provide the service. Shoot, most of Europe might decide to spend the money they’re blowing on Islamic refugees to pay for it.
Either way, the EU has had tens of billions of subsidies each year from the United States for far more than my life in the form of free defense services.
“A bright and talented person without any doubt”, “an outstanding and talented personality”, “the absolute leader of the presidential race”.
That’s a lot of verbal acreage, far beyond one word which means both “bright” and “gaudy”. This is Putin slithering back, and quite frankly if memory serves his “building relations with Europe” consisted of selling fossil-fuels with the provision that he could and would turn off the tap any time as a means of controlling them politically.
Trump has a pretty fair sense of history, being 69 years old. This concession seems to come for a reason.
Russia has bad corruption problems, and America has lately been no paragon in that department either. Trying to be a superpower when you have super-rot is ultimately a vain pursuit, and Putin knows it. The rot has to be addressed.
And such are the mixed blessings of the oil biz. We’ve had less trouble with Islamic Middle East doing that to us, but at the expense of kissing their jihadist rears.
At the least, having serious competition can keep the jihadist oil sheiks from getting too big for their pantaloons.
Whatever Donald does, it won’t be to shuck and jive like Barack.
I took it as euro-snobbery myself. Utilizing a word which means bright in a gaudy sense, but putting it a context to interpret as “bright” in an English language sense as “intelligent”. I remember getting that sense at the back of my neck when he said it, that it was back-handed, and that turned out to be right. He equivocated. See, this is us being tone-deaf American clods... Don’t you know...!
Neither of them could control a major ocean basin and Russia has about 10x the nuclear capability of China...
Bingo! That’s what I always use on the tools that crow about their [declining] social systems. If we weren’t carrying their defense water for the last 70 years they’d all be either broke or dead quite some time back...
