ORLANDO, Fla. Ortiz. Rivera. González. Almodóvar. As the names of the victims of Sundays massacre here rolled out, this slice of the United States known as the unofficial 79th municipio, or municipality, of Puerto Rico felt a communal shudder.
It was a roll call of Puerto Ricans, gay and straight, who had gathered to dance and hear salsa music at the club and died in the barrage of bullets. Like so many others, they were here, in this booming Central Florida metropolitan area of nearly 400,000 Puerto Ricans, because it has become a Puerto Rican touchstone: Spanish flows freely; the smells of Mallorca pastries and mofongo waft from bakeries and restaurants; the hot and humid weather feels like home.
Its as though it had happened in our own family, said Yolanda Rivera, 71, who works at the Melao Bakery, a popular shop in Kissimmee, just south of Orlando. We are praying to God he heals their pain for the loss of their children. We Hispanics have become a little closer because of this.
A staggering 90 percent of the 49 victims killed by Omar Mateen, the gunman who opened fire in a gay nightclub, were Hispanic or of Hispanic descent, including Mexican, Colombian and Dominican, community leaders said. Of those, 23 were Puerto Rican. This has stunned Puerto Rican residents across Florida where there are a million islanders, rivaling the number in New York State and on the island, where the deaths have set off a national mourning.
For Puerto Ricans here, the heartbreak is especially strong...The fact that so many young Puerto Ricans died in a spasm of violence during a night of dancing seems a particularly bitter twist.

The Hispanics...espcially the Catholics...should see the massacre in Orlando as a call to arms against the growing menace of imperial Islam.
Puerto Rico Ping! Please Freepmail me if you want on or off the list.
Ever since the identity of this evil barbarian came out, the meter has moved continuously from Islam to Christian/Gun-owners on who bears responsibility.
And their gold boy Obama sided with the Muzzies.
Latinos are even less tolerant of homosexuality than whites. I doubt the entire island is hearing that call.
It bears remarking to point out that homosexuality “does not exist” in Muslim or Latin cultures. Yet here we have a bunch of Latino homos killed by a Muslim homo. So they must exist because there they are on the stainless steel tables in Orlando’s morgue. Side by side. They finally found a way to coexist. Islam, gay, Hispanic and all dead. The true secret to coexist.
Probably more than one named that. But doesn’t this prove that Hispanics tend to be homosexual? And that would be consistent with the rise in homosexual militants in this country paralleling the rise of hispanics.
I think Hispanics tend to be homosexual in the same proportion as the rest of the population.
Again...
They sadly were hit hard. Prayers to those families.
Some are saying they wished they had weapons on them. I would typically agree but alcohol and guns don’t mix. The death toll could have been much worse with guns going off all over the place. Common sense has to be taken into consideration at some point.
I was disturbed by the gay community trying to frame this horrific massacre as somehow just about them. It was about innocent people being slaughtered on US soil. We all bleed red, white, and blue.
Well maybe but if this happened in Texas and 49 died. We’d hear endless Texan stuff for days on end. So being Puerto Rico is part of America in a way, I give them as pass on this.
What!Could have been worse! Common Sense!
You are out of your mind. If one of those victims had a gun they had a chance instead of being slaughtered in a pig pile hiding in a bathroom stall where he shot through the stall and under it and kept firing till he killed all he thought were there.
I wish to God that one or two of them had a gun and knew how to use it.
Lol. Cute. I give you credit for thinking a drunk in a very dark loud room could get the shot without shooting others who in turn bring out their guns too. You must live in a wonderful reality where everything is perfect.
There must be something seriously wrong with you that you wouldn’t wish they had a fighting chance. What basis do you have for suggesting that they were all drunk,or all so drunk that they would shoot each other.
Only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy
with a gun and a good, steady aim. Even a Twinkie with a
gun is better than NOTHING!
Well for one thing I live in the real world. I was in the navy 24 years and went to a million clubs and trust me, nobody is capable of using a gun when they can’t even walk. But you keep your nice unrealistic views. It keeps you warm in bed I’m sure.
I’m not referring to the Puerto Ricans who’ve died. They didn’t set them selves apart. I’m referring to gay rights activists taking ownership of the tragedy.
