The ex-wife of the 29-year-old man suspected of killing 50 people in a Orlando nightclub early Sunday said that he was violent and mentally unstable and beat her repeatedly while they were married.
The ex-wife said she met Omar Mateen online about eight years ago and decided to move to Florida and marry him.
At first, the marriage was normal, she said, but then he became abusive.

After the couple split, a friend of Mateen's said the young man became steadily more religious. The friend, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Mateen several years ago went on the pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia known as the umrah.
"He was quite religious," the friend said.
He said Mateen had hoped to become a law enforcement officer but that plan never panned out.

A Fairfax County Police sergeant who admits tipping off a terrorism suspect that he was under FBI surveillance also helped kill what had been a successful intelligence and terrorism-related training program within his police department.
Sgt. Weiss Rasool was sentenced to two years probation on April 22 after pleading guilty to illegally accessing a police database to run license tag numbers for a friend who thought he was being followed. Those tags traced back to FBI agents who had Rasool’s acquaintance under surveillance as part of a terrorism investigation.

Our whole system is a joke. We spend billions and billions on Homeland Security and counterterrorism. This is the second time FBI has investigated and interviewed an Islamic terrorist who went on to kill and maim innocent civilians in America. Still, we’ll have to be inconvenienced by large-scale terror drills where first responders make a lot of OT while getting a rush play acting.

Public records show that Mateen was living with a 30-year-old woman named Noor Zahi Salman. A Facebook profile under the name “Noor Zahi” shows two photos of a woman posing with Mateen and a small boy. When reached by phone, Salman’s mother declined to comment.
