Ronald Reagan’s Son: My Dad Wouldn’t Support Trump
nymag ^

Monday saw many of Donald Trump's fellow Republicans express their displeasure at his comments about Judge Gonzalo Curiel, whom Trump says can't make an impartial ruling in a lawsuit involving Trump University because of his Mexican heritage. Newt Gingrich called his attacks "inexcusable," and Paul Ryan said the comments are "based on reasoning I don't relate to." But the GOP front-runner also received a rebuff from beyond the grave from one of the most important Republican figureheads of all time: Ronald Reagan.

Okay, so Reagan didn't actually manifest to dissuade voters from supporting Trump — instead, his son Michael Reagan expressed his doubts about Trump via Twitter. "I will not be voting for Donald Trump tomorrow in the California primary," he announced. He went on:

This most likely would be the 1st time if my father was alive that he would not support the nominee of the GOP @Reince @newsmax — Michael Reagan (@ReaganWorld) June 6, 2016

This election is not about supporting Trump.

This election is about stopping Hillary from having 2-3 SCOTUS selections.

Sorry Ron. You and your dad agreed on nothing. Once again he would prove you wrong

Trump is a lib, but if he can destroy the GOPee, it’s progress.

He'll do better than that!

So, were his comments about a La Raza judge not accurate? Do some more homework, Michael, and get back to me on that.

“Under normal circumstances, he’s probably right [that Ronald Reagan wouldn't have voted for Trump]. But to save the Republic from a communist takeover...he damn well would!”

Well said. What exactly do these NeverTrump Republicans and conservatives want the rest of us to do? I was a strong Ted Cruz supporter and have no regrets about that. I gave money to the Cruz campaign for months and voted for Cruz in the primaries. I was disappointed when Cruz had to drop out. However, now I am 100% committed to getting Donald Trump elected. What is the alternative? Vote for Hillary Clinton? Vote for the Libertarian candidate? The former may win and the latter surely will lose. I'm voting for Trump. I'm sick of the Republicans who publicly whine about how they won't be voting for Trump. OK, don't vote for him, just keep your mouth shut and leave the rest of us alone. We conservatives would at least get a hearing if Trump is in the White House. Meanwhile, how do you think HRC is going to repay the Republicans who helped get her elected? She'll give them the back her hand, that's how she'll repay them.

Trump is NOT a lib. What he is proposing as policies is straight conservative. Quit believing the press and do your homework.

This election is not about supporting Trump.

Well, if Sarah Palin could support John McCain, I guess anybody can support Trump.

Michael Reagan is a pansy that didn’t support Reagan in the first place. What the Hell would that coward know about what President Reagan would have supported?

As a trial lawyer, I do not take lightly the idea of attacking the integrity of a Judge. Yet there are situations where it may be both necessary & ethical.

I do not know enough of the facts in the Trump U litigation to believe it would be ethical for me to comment on the fairness of the Judge. I may suspect from a little information; but I will not state a suspicion on so sensitive a question. On the other hand, I will stand up for the candidate whom I support for President. Donald Trump did not make the public Mexican identification for a man born in Indiana of Mexican lineage, the Judge did. It has been reliably reported that he made that identification by joining several organizations, which wear that identification as a badge of honor.

As for Michael Reagan and other's feeling a need--compulsive or other--to immediately disavow Trump's comments on the Judge? I consider that unfortunate--not only for giving currency to the anti-Trump Democrats, but for showing something other than a cool head among those desperate to strongly disavow.

By contrast, an incident in my youth comes to mind. President Harry Truman reacted furiously, when a newspaper music critic panned a public performance by Harry's daughter. Truman threatened a physical confrontation with the man. One could certainly question whether that was Presidential. But I do not remember anyone rushing to disassociate themselves from the comment.

Some people are too sensitive. A political leader is not a likely candidate for saint hood. They all sometimes get angry, and over-react. Michael Reagan should find a better issue to influence his vote.

Dear Michael:

Your Daddy’s America bears little resemblance with today’s America....different times, different problems, different players, different enemies and different traitors here at home.

Michael Reagan supports John Kasich. President Reagan would never have supported such a milquetoast liberal.

Who cares what Mikey thinks or says? I find him a uniformly unlikeable person.

The fact of the matter is Reagan is dead, so NOBODY knows what he would do.

Based on his past track record though, he had managed to make his peace with Republicans who were a lot less conservative than Trump.

I hold President Reagan in very high esteem as a president but what a shame about how his children turned out.

Say what you want about Donald Trump but his children were definitely raised right.

“This isn’t the dancer?”

No, that’s Ron.

Michael is the adopted son (which explains the utter lack of Reagan DNA in him).
