With the California primary fast approaching, the media are rolling out their favorite fairy tale about how Republican Pete Wilsons support for Proposition 187 in 1994 was a historic, game-changing error for the GOP, driving Hispanics from the party for good!
Both CNN and MSNBC retold this completely bogus narrative this week. NPR rolls it out once every two weeks.
I along with other people capable of reading election returns have written about this forever. I did most recently in Adios, America, in a chapter titled, I Wrote This Chapter After Noticing How Stupid Rich People Are, inspired by a dinner party I went to in Palm Beach, Florida, the day after Id already turned in my book.
Im writing an emergency book on Trump right now, due today, and liberals wont stop lying about Prop 187 so for this weeks column, Im telling the real story of that initiative, again. Maybe the 700th time is the charm!
In 1994, Gov. Pete Wilson of California was headed for defeat in his re-election bid. He had an abysmal 15 percent approval rating syphilis had a higher approval rating. He ended up pulling out an amazing come-from-behind victory by tying himself to Proposition 187, a ballot initiative that would deny illegal immigrants non-emergency government services.
In the lead-up to the election, the media freely dispensed advice to Wilson, nearly identical to the advice theyre giving Donald Trump today.
Proposition 187, was, in the words of The New York Times, a nativist abomination, xenophobic, and a platform of bigotry, racism and scapegoating. Republicans faced an epic loss unless they repudiated Prop 187 and leapt on the Hispandering bandwagon and pronto.

Pete Prop 187 Wilson won the election with 55 percent of the vote. That included 21 percent of the black vote nearly three times the 8 percent average for Republicans in House races nationwide the same year.................This time will be Trump's immigration proposals
CA’s demographics in 1994 that unanimously passed Prop. 187 are almost exactly the same today in 2016.
GOP Nominee Donald J. Trump has the best chance of winning CA since Ronald W. Reagan.
She wanted Romney and Christy, I won't listen to her, she's skinny, I hate her I hate her I hate her!!!!!.
Only if E Pluribus Unum is still operational....
Politics is a dynamic, changing system.
What worked well in the 80s or the 90s didn't work well later because the state (and the country) changed in the meantime.
Love this part....... Unaware that the Times political advice was a gag....the moronic Democrat, Kathleen Brown, was convinced opposition to Proposition 187 would propel her to victory.
She campaigned against the proposition, urging voters to send a message that says we understand that in diversity is our strength!
....and lost bigtime.....
Unanimously?
if prop 187 was on the ballot today it would WIN!!
I chuckle everytime I see that stupid phrase:”diversity is our strength”
Divided We Fall
Divide and Conquer
UNITED we STAND!
Excellent report by Ann Coulter
And yet trump and his secure the border message still is resonating
The first time I read the headline I thought it said: Ann Coulter Key to Trumps Victory: Meth.
She has said some pretty goofy things from time to time, but this would have been way to much. Of course she did date Bill Maher, so hey anything is possible.
“Politics is a dynamic, changing system.”
The more it changes, the more it stays the same.
Are you suggesting prop 187 would not pass today ?
AZ SB1070 anyone?
In my political activism I find People are basically the same today as in 94... and 64. Cable TV, internet, social media are different. There are some changes in how to reach and communicate with people. But people are still basically the same.
Example: To understand those of Mexican heritage get the Hollywood movie FOR GREATER GLORY with Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria. That movie is set in the 1920s. But it perfectly explains the various approaches Mexicans bring to politics.
I took a heavily Hispanic Chicago suburb that went 55% for Gore and swung it 65% for the anti-corrupt establishment extreme right wing slate in 2001. I got 100% of the Hispanic vote (except 1 Puerto Rican on welfare).
But in 2002 the establishment ran from governor an extremely anti-Hispanic candidate. 100% of Hispanics in my suburb would not vote for him (including my wife and 3 daughters).
I left the suburb and turned the conservative lead over to the wife of the local Black pastor. She delivered 87% for the extreme conservative slate. She got 100% of the Hispanic vote, which was much larger by then. She also did much better with the Black vote than I had.
Conclusion: Conservatives can get the Hispanic vote in many, but not all situations. It takes hard work and brains, just as it does to get anyones vote.
“, Wilsons Democratic opponent, Kathleen Brown, was convinced opposition to Proposition 187 would propel her to victory. She campaigned against the proposition, urging voters to send a message that says we understand that in diversity is our strength!
Kathleen Brown was joined in this by Jack Kemp, Bill Bennett, and the then governor of Texas, GW Bush. I never forgot who the traitors were.
Thanks mandaladon.
“Of course she did date Bill Maher”
Oh, I didn’t need to know that.
Ew.
Bkmk
Whoever comes up these dumb slogans anyway? Just what do these empty slogans mean anyway?
