A STRING TRIO + 1The string trio violin, viola and cello has a much smaller repertory than the venerable string quartet, until you add one more non-string instrument to make a quartet. There is a large repertory for piano quartets.
MOZART: OBOE QUARTET IN F, K. 370But it actually started with something a lot smaller than a piano. If you combine an oboe with a string trio, you get one of Mozarts most beguiling pieces. Mozart loved the oboe passionately, and it shows in this piece.
This is all three movements, and the whole piece lasts only 15 minutes. The finale is a wonderful dance.

Indeed. The hurt never stops. You just have to force yourself to think about something else. Or not.

A STRING TRIO + 1
MOZART: PIANO QUARTET IN G MINOR, K. 478Mozart was the first to team a piano with a string trio. The key of G minor was always magical for Wolfgang, and this three movement piece has the kind of drama that Mozart brought to the opera house.
The first movement, marked allegro in 4/4, is in sonata format, so you know what to listen for. The exposition is repeated. Development is short and moves through a variety of minor keys, concentrating on the first subject. The recap is stated strongly, and the second subject is stated in G minor rather than G Major. But the development-to-recap repeat is observed, which is a bit unusual.
The slow movement, marked andante in 3/8 and B-flat, could have come straight out of the opera house.
The rondo finale, marked allegro in 2/2 and G Major, will feature that first subject returning again and again. Its pure fun. That abrupt left turn in the coda to E-flat is a real thigh-slapper.
Mozart: Piano Quartet in G minor, K. 478
