That is not true at all. This is a well documented event. Bush was his only competitor and not really close but the race was very acrimonious so Reagan was intent upon unifying the party. The recommendation of Reagan’s advisors was that he choose Bush. He told Bush that one thing that was not negotiable was that Bush had to back up Reagan on abortion by repudiating his pro abortion stance. Overnight Bush became pro life and the deal as done.

If purist were the benchmark our deleted candidate wouldn’t have seen the light of day.

Why now do we seek one?

At the 1980 convention, Reagan was counting on Gerald Ford being his running mate. He had begun laying the groundwork for that very thing months prior. At the convention, and during an interview with Walter Cronkite, Ford started rambling on about him not just being VP, but serving more like a co-president. Reagan wants nothing to do with this and at the 11th hour, picks Bush. No vetting, no interviewing, just a phone call and then walking out on the stage together.

This choice had little to do with uniting the party. It was more about convenience and safety in a guy with executive experience, a long time of military service and name recognition. How differently the world might be today had Reagan not wasted his time with Ford and made the right choice with Jack Kemp.

If Trump picks Kasich, it will lose him votes.

Kasich is a little bit slow!

he never rules out anybody lol.

He is just playing nice, which is odd for him, but he will pick someone very good who will bring a state with them.

You’re right about him offering Ford first. But Reagan did not want Ford. He thought he needed Ford. But Ford wanted to be more than a normal VP. He wanted a co-Presidency and Reagan refused. He went to the next logical choice Bush. And what I described is what happened next. The establishment did not foist Bush on Reagan. He just recognized that it was the best move politically.

Who do you think Reagan would rather have had? There wasn’t anyone else who was a plausible VP and who was as conservative as Reagan. You can’t choose someone who doesn’t exist. It’s the same with Trump really. No one who adds anything to the ticket is going to be anything like Trump.

Blitzer springs the question on Trump at a moment after that Trump is informed by CNN Wolfie that Kasich is getting out.

Trump gives the polite answer after Wolfiee tells Trump “how important” that Ohio is in the election to republicans.

I felt more like this was a polite answer from Trump. I don’t think he would say, “No!” like that. I don’t think he’ll pick Kasich, and my sincere hope is that he does not. Kasich wants to control things. He would be difficult to work with.

I agree that it is a trial balloon, and that balloon needs to be emphatically popped.

- Kasich supported and implemented Obamacare’s Medicare expansion http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/john-kasich-bible-medicaid_us_56140a54e4b022a4ce5fb1e3

- Kasich supports Amnesty for illegals. http://www.ontheissues.org/John_Kasich.htm

- Kasich voted for the “Assault” Weapons Ban. https://grabien.com/file.php?id=53463 and as of last year did not regret that vote

- Kasich dismissively said Christian bakers should “bake the cupcake” and participate in a gay parody of the sacrament of marriage, even if it violates their religious beliefs. https://www.frcaction.org/updatearticle/20160225/kasich-pushes

- Kasich supports Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/john-kasich-id-consider-nominating-merrick-garland-supreme-court-election-2016/

A Kasich pick would lead many people to question Trump’s sincerity, and that would cost far more than whatever minuscule gain there was in having such an ineffective campaigner on the ticket.

It was a last minute decision. One of the main reasons he chose Bush was because Bush was at the convention and could make it out on the stage with him in a matter of minutes (after Ford refused to play ball). There was no vetting or interviewing. He didn't have time to consider what was best for uniting the party. That's what choosing Ford was supposed to do. Reagan first broached it with Ford 5 months earlier.

Again, he should have gone with Kemp.

It almost got Reagan killed too. The Bush family being friends with the family of the assassin doesn't pass the smell test.
