The Republican senator gave up his dual citizenship months after first learning he was a Canadian citizen Texas Senator (and possible 2016 presidential hopeful) Ted Cruz has formally given up his Canadian citizenship, about nine months after learning he had it. While at home in Houston on Tuesday, Cruz was notified by mail that the renunciation became official on May 14, The Dallas Morning News reports. Hes pleased to receive the notification and glad to have this process finalized, spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said. Cruz intended to give up his Canadian citizenship, which was not a secret, after The Dallas Morning News first brought it to his attention to the surprise of him and his family last August. Nothing against Canada, but Im an American by birth and as a U.S. senator, I believe I should be only an American, said Cruz, who was born in the Canadian province of Alberta, at the time. Like U.S. law, Canadian law dictates that anyone born in Canada becomes a Canadian citizen automatically. Babies born in non-U.S. countries to at least one American parent are entitled to American citizenship as well. The U.S. Constitution requires presidents to be natural born citizens, which is commonly believed to include Americans born with the right to citizenship, even if they were not born on American soil specifically.

Constitutional constructionist, my ass....
Literally old news
Phew! He’s all yours now! Enjoy!
Super lawyer didn’t know he had Canadian citizenship???
I don’t buy it. He also released his Canadian birth certificate.
Wow, just wow. Natural Born Cruz ain’t.
This article was posted three times longer ago than you have been registered at Free Republic. Pretty sure everyone around here is familiar with the story.
You guys are so happy about Trump whose nomination will destroy conservativeism.
Sorry, I forgot. You’re not conservatives.
That's why I think Ted always knew he was a Canadian Citizen.
IIRC, His parents' Canadian Papers are sealed.
Not yet decided in law by the SCOTUS!
It is new news that his wife Heidi said on the campaign trail that he is a Hispanic immigrant to the United States.
Conservative as in say whatever you need to say to the sheep to get elected and then do nothing when in office? Yes, I'm gladly not one of those conservatives.
So, the only point I can see in posting two year old “news” like this is to start a flame war.
As a long-time Trump supporter, I’ve noticed a new trend at FR recently, namely, now that the gaggle of sleeper Cruz trolls have been zotted, a NEW group of sleeper trolls have arisen to try and start wars at FR. This new group of trolls now pretend like they are Trump supporters, but needlessly and pointless attack Cruz, who is now pretty much done anyway.
This video makes it understandable that Cruz may not even be eligible to stay as a Senator.
Nice history lesson too.

He or his parents had to have filed something to get him recognized as a US citizen.
When was that done?
My suspicion is that was not done until 1986 when he wanted a driver’s license and a passport for a school trip.
It really all does not matter, he is clearly ineligible.
Two strikes.
Foreign birth AND foreign national father.
Since this is the second time in a row that the Birther problem comes up we need to make these requirements very clear and enumerated in precise language under law.
“Literally old news”
So are the Clintoon scandals and the so called missing 9/11 pages.
Really old news is the Constitution!
What’s wrong with going down memory lane?
Does it make you uncomfortable?
I find it hilarious that Cruz supporters anywhere on this forum would complain about a story posted over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over...
That’s all they have done for the last year.
What a hoot these folks have been reduced to.
