Patti Davis, daughter of late President Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan, penned an open letter Thursday to Will Ferrell, criticizing the actor for agreeing to play the 40th president in an upcoming satirical film about his battle with dementia.
I saw the news bulletin as did everyone that you intend to portray my father in the throes of Alzheimers for a comedy that you are also producing, Ms. Davis, a former actress, wrote in her blog. Perhaps you have managed to retain some ignorance about Alzheimers and other versions of dementia. Perhaps if you knew more, you would not find the subject humorous.
Alzheimers doesnt care if you are President of the United States or a dockworker. It steals what is most precious to a human being memories, connections, the familiar landmarks of a lifetime that we all come to rely on to hold our place secure in this world and keep us linked to those we have come to know and love, she continued. I watched as fear invaded my fathers eyes this man who was never afraid of anything. I heard his voice tremble as he stood in the living room and said, I dont know where I am. I watched helplessly as he reached for memories, for words, that were suddenly out of reach and moving farther away. For ten long years he drifted past the memories that marked his life, past all that was familiar
and mercifully, finally past the fear. There was laughter in those years, but there was never humor.

My grandfather was named Will Ferrell. I never knew him. He wrote poetry and worked for an oil company. It’s extremely annoying that there is now another Will Ferrell out that. A curse on him.
This is a person from the Left. If he heard you use the term retard, he’d probably get angry about it.
Then when it comes to Reagan, there’s a total disconnect because it’s someone he has no respect for.
The Left are very ugly people inside. I’m sure that would take them by surprise someone thinking that of a member of ‘the beautiful poeple, but it’s true.
My wife and I are going to start attending a local Alzheimer’s support group that is lead by Patti Davis since we are dealing with that with my mother-in-law. I give her a lot of credit for opening up so much publicly. Will Feral (sic) should be ashamed.
Lower than Ferrell (who would eat garbage for a 5 dollar bill) are those behind this “project”. Who are the executives so into debasement that they will make this film because of sheer hatred, knowing that it will never turn a penny profit.
I do not for one minute believe that Reagan was in the throes of Alzheimers while in the White House. I read about this movie and think it is disgusting. And despite what I think of Patty Davis - her past and her political views, I think she came to love and respect and reconciled with both her father and her mother. Bravo to her and to Michael Reagan for speaking out against this.
“:^)
We never knew it until a couple of Doctors filled us in and we did some online research. My Dad had open heart surgery 2 months ago and his physical health is good other than occasional UTIs, but his mind keeps him from doing what he needs to do to rehab.
It’s been quite maddening to watch him just give up on life when there is nothing really wrong with him.
Amen to that, couldn’t agree more. The wife and I are going through this now with my MIL, it’s neither pleasant nor funny.
Will Ferrell is probably having a big laugh at this. He wants to hurt the Reagan family and their friends.
On what planet is dementia or Alzheimer’s disease funny? Even if it’s Al Gore or Obama ... it’s not funny. It’s tragic.
I understand completely, see my post #29.
When I first heard about the new Will Ferrell movie, I cringed at the thought of how tasteless, stupid and painfully unfunny it would be. And then I heard it involved Reagan and Alzheimer’s, so now I figure it will be even worse.
I can envision a delightful family comedy where President Obama decides to build a basketball court on the White House lawn, and famous deceased Democrats emerge from the mist for a midnight pickup game. Truman’s so good at three pointers that he’s nicknamed “The Bomb.” FDR shows up to try out for the team, and demands accommodation of his wheelchair. Obama issues an executive order naming the club the Washington Transgenderals. Everything goes great until Teddy Kennedy drives the team bus into the Potomac, but it’s okay because Obama can walk on water. Call it Field of Schemes.
Thank you, I couldn’t agree more.
Will Ferrel, what was the last thing he did that was half funny?
Elf?
I met Maureen in Japan when she was a USO girl, May 1968.
Will is going to lose a lot of fans over this one
Yes, it’s great that Patty is speaking up! There is nothing funny about what President Reagan went through. I am glad to see that she is trying to protect him.
Why hasn’t Hollywood made a movie about one of the great love affairs ever in the White House....Bill and Monica. Now that could be a funny movie!
I at times disagree with Patti, not all of the time, but this time she is right on, she writes well also - in my opinion.
