Russia should be warned that its dangerous flybys of U.S. ships and planes could be met by force, President Barack Obama's nominee as the next NATO and U.S. European Command commander said Thursday.
"Sir, I believe that should be known -- yes," Army Gen. Curtis M. "Mike" Scaparrotti said when asked by Sen. John McCain whether Russia should be told that the U.S. would take action if American lives were endangered.

Why is McCain always so ready to go to war.
He was right about having to have soldiers in Iraq for 40 years, or whatever he said.
can’t think of anything else he’s been right on.
But did he not say they “will”. Try that question on a Patton acolyte. Panty waste posterior orifices!
As a war hero, war is (unfortunately) good for his re-election prospects.
And he’s up for re-election this year.
What a farce!
Our military has been so politicized that our generals can’t even go to the bathroom without getting permission from Obama directly.
The day will come that we will have another “Pearl Harbor” incident...this time due to political correctness and the complete “gutting” of our military’s ability to react without asking permission in fear of making a political incident and subsequent punishment of those who made professional military decisions.
We are the laughing stock of the world.

He cannot leave office soon enough. It will take years to clean up the mess he’s created.
No. Bush's war in Iraq destabilized much of the Middle East as zer0’s Arab Spring and the removal of Kaddfi, did to the rest. We should have stayed on point after 9/11 and gotten Bin Laden and if punishment needed to be meted out it should have been to Saudi Arabia and Egypt who funded and provided training land for Al Qaeda to train. Carpet bombing them into the Stone Age.
OH BELIEVE ME, after being here for 9/11, I got suckered into the Iraq thing to, only to see his Saudi buddies get off the hook.
I’m talking about once the deed had been done, we needed to keep men there. It may have stopped ISIS before it began.
Yup. True
If IIRC, Powers was over Russian territory when he got shot down....and Russia didn't call for war.
I find it “funny” we reprimand army privates for not wearing a PT vest but we are not even mentioning the word reprimand when Russians make near Kamikaze approaches of our boats with litteral flying bombs
If the Russians parked warships in the Gulf of Mexico 70 miles off our coast, would we be buzzing them?
Could the Russians then shoot down our planes for endangering Russian lives?
Enquiring minds want to know who is setting up all this provocation, the role of Senator McCain, and what is the end game?
You ask some interesting questions. And I’d ask one more:
This Russian buzzing of a US Navy ship occurred in the Baltic Sea. What was a US Navy ship doing in the Baltic Sea?
Certainly the ship had every right to be there, international waters and all that. But I certainly can’t see a reason for it, unless someone is trying to provoke someone else.
These incidents are Putin’s way of giving Obama a wedgie.
A friend in the Navy while Carter was President said that Syrian planes would regularly break the sound barrier while passing between and below the tops of the ship’s masts. Glass broke, sailors got broken ear drums. He said the moment Reagan became president the close passes stopped.
The problem here is the perceived weakness of the President. To the world, the US military must look like a pro-wrestler body with five o’clock shadow but wearing lipstick, high heels and a long, blond wig.
Puting is in some trouble over in Russia. He’s driving this BS. The Obama Administration is just stuck in neutral as far as foreign policy is concerned. It’s late in the game for them and they are not going to put the starters back in (not that they were any good).
I think the military, specifically the Joint Chiefs, because there is a little room to maneuver now. Witness the “Freedom of Navigation” cruises past the Chinese man-made islands. The reaction to the Russian buzzing (which BTW happened to the same vessel when it was operating in the Black Sea with NO reaction).
Why do we care what a general says about the navy?
Gen.Blather, I was in the navy during that time, over in that part of the world (Med deployments on a carrier) and never saw anything like that, ever. I don't buy it. Perhaps on some smaller unattached ships that was possible, but I think we would have gotten wind of it.
There were always incidents regarding surface ships and subs bumping into each other, etc, but not activity like this that I ever saw. I never saw anything even remotely resembling that kind of activity from the air arm of any country.
Supersonic fly-bys between the masts below mast level would not have been tolerated, even during the pathetic Carter administration, IMO. That behavior would have been regarded as a severe hazard to any vessel, and would likely have been addressed.
All that said, I cannot disagree with your observation that the perception of the US Military may be degraded, and that is a bad thing.
Nothing invites aggression so much as a perception of weakness.
