MOST analysis of Donald Trumps support in the primary elections has focused on his appeal to poorer, working-class white voters, who are assumed to have lost the most to globalisation and are more open to his particular brand of populist politics. But his victory in the New York Republican primary on April 19th underscored his wider support across the partys base. Mr Trump took 61% of the vote overall (the first time he has gained over 50%) winning across all demographic groups. That was to be expected in his home state. However, averaging out his support in all state primaries (where exit polling is available) shows that richer and better educated voters form as big a part of Mr Trumps support base as those at the lower end of the income and education scales.

So the 1.8 million who turned out to vote Dem in the closed primary represent 40% of the Obama vote total in 2012.
The NY Rep voter turnout was the highest in 40 years. The 900,000 total votes cast represent 36% of the total votes cast for Romney in 2012. Based on those numbers, there is no doubt Trump will do better than Romney. Independents, conservatives, and those who have been outside the political process should help Trump. It will still be an uphill fight to win NY. I doubt it will happen, but if it does, then we are wathing a landslide of epic proportions.
FL, NV, NH, OH, MI, and PA are the states to watch.
You got one thing right, the Trump supporters are mostly Libertarians and some Conservatives, most of them not very deep thinking, whatever their educational level.
My Nephew, a Bernie supporter, told me expressly, that if Sanders loses, he will vote for Trump.
That was 5 months ago. I did not ask him, he just told me. He said that his friends were like minded.
I do not understand it, but for me it is evidence that your remark is invalid.

Trump and Bernie address the same issues. They have different solutions but they do focus on the same things.
I’m sure it’s because Wisconsin only has two Mexicans.
I’m sure it is hard for you to think Donald isn’t corrupt like Cruz and Donald isn’t taking thousands and millions from his rich friends. BECAUSE HE ISN’T...
He is spending his own money and he doesn’t have to sell out our country to pay back any dirt money given.
Believe what you want I understand your negative remarks. Its hard to actually see and believe something good in any American when you’ve backed a man as Cruz for so long.
THERE are good HONEST American’s you need to take your blinders off. Its great out here in America where respect and love of country thrives.
Believing in American’s isn’t stupid or naive..its LOVE of Man and COUNTRY.
Just trying to inject some common sense.
Trump (nor any politician for that matter) will or would turn down any money "pushed in their face"
just how do you define “deep thinking”?
does “deep thinking” accomplish goals, solve problems, get this country on track to be salvageable as a country so we don’t slip into NAU or such?
I prefer simple solutions and actually accomplishing things to sitting alone or in groups “deep thinking” but getting nothing changed for the health of our country and it’s legal citizens.
Your words make me think of the kids coming out of college “deep thinkers” but not smart or wisely educated to cope in the real world.
Well, Hillary's been running around the southland pandering to poor, uneducated voters as well.
Well, just the poor, uneducated non-working, dependent-class" black ones, but they're just as poor and uneducated as as the "poorer, working-class white voters" that The Economist considers to be Trump supporters, when they're talking down to or about them.
So, in the end, if Hillary's plantation dwellers outnumber Trump supporters, so be it. It's all a wash.
But let's not forget all those new people Trump's bringing into the process. The old formulas may not work any longer.
This one from March talks about EPA.
He talks a lot about cutting out whole departments.
You were a case of friendly fire. [Secretary Kerry will be at Dover AFB to greet you home with full military honors :0) ]
You cannot say that Trump has been offered any money that he's turned down. He's made the statement that he's "self-funded" and "doesn't need it", but he HAS received donations that he's used. Don't think there's a thing wrong with that.
And whoever gets the nomination will need big money if it's true that a national race will cost a billion dollars.
Apology accepted.
Have you read any of the articles about the meeting that Trump’s new advisor had with the GOP Establishment? Did you read that Trump’s campaign and promises were just an act? Did you read that Trump has been just trying to stir up the anger to win votes, that the way he has been campaigning isn’t really who he is?
Well, we got the first sight of who Trump really is when he recommended bowing to political correctness on same sex bathrooms.
That is what I mean by not very deep thinking. Trump has been performing and his Conservative supporters have not only enjoyed the show, they became part of it.
I would not bet against the Donald walking back the 2A support. He was in favor of an AWB back in 2000, and
I am convinced he would make a deal involving putting an AWB back in play in exchange for, say, a wall.
I actually believe Trump when he says OVER and OVER in his Rallies he DOES NOT take the big money from his friends.
You on the other hand question his honesty by saying he is taking big money even though he’s self funding.
YOU are the one questioning me as how I know he’s not taking big money. So if you on the other hand were watching and listening to his Rallies you would be better informed as to how Mr. Trump is funding his campaign.
Agreed.
Republicans are always crazy or stupid, sometimes both.
I always seek out a British publication when I want honest information about American Politics. Relying on people who can see through a keyhole with both eyes at the same time is a true comfort.
Thanks for this. Just adding in the other major candidates:
NY Primary (Closed Primary, Dem and GOP ONLY)
Note: Approximately 25%+ of NY voters are registered 3rd Party and were not eligible to vote in this election.
Clinton - 1,054,083
Sanders - 763,469
Trump - 524,932
Kasich - 217,904
Cruz - 126,151
Total (D) - 1,817,552
Total (R) - 868,987
Clinton/Trump - 2.01
Clinton/Cruz - 8.36
Is it reasonable to expect Trump to prevail in NY over Clinton in November? No. My estimate is that Trump has a 1 in 4 shot.
Is it reasonable to expect Trump to give enough of a battle to force Clinton to spend resources in NY that otherwise would have been spent in states like OH, FL and VA? Yes.
Cruz himself has called Trump supporters, “Trumpsters.” Yet he expects our vote in November.
Today he called us “gullible.” If I’ve counted correctly that means he’s quintupled down on insulting Trump supporters. You, know, those millions of people whose votes he will desperately need if he gets the nomination.
