Donald Trump said Thursday he would change the Republican Party platform's position on abortion to include exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.
Trump made the remarks during a town hall on the "Today" show on NBC on Thursday morning when host Savannah Guthrie asked him about abortion exceptions.
"The Republican platform every four years has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child should not be infringed," Guthrie said. "And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the (abortion) exceptions that you have?"
"Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely," Trump said. "For the three exceptions, I would."
Currently, the Republican platform abortion policy reads: "We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

>>The truth at last!
Not really. We’ve been saying that all along and you guys keep hearing something else because your platform is based on the idea that “Ted Cruz is the only consistent conservative with constitutional values” and the whole world looks like a nail when your only tool is a hammer.
No reform is possible and no return to “constitutional values” will happen until we can end illegal invasions and create an economy that puts people to work in jobs that make going to work worth it.
Fine with me.
If congress passes a law making it illegal with no exceptions (Could a pro-life president write an executive order? Send directives to all his underlings and make it extremely difficult?) then which candidate WONT veto it?
None that I know of. Even cruz says his one exception is the life of the mother, but docs allow it if she says she is depressed. Today’s medical standards make this exception almost obsolete.
Lol! Next we'll be reading FReepers cheering the idea of abortions for Mexicans! It's all to save "western civilization!"
Thing is, Biblical consequence for legal child sacrifice is invasion and conquest (wrath of God). So trying to rid the symptoms is simply not going to work.
Oh, by all means. Let's not let a little thing like G-d A-mighty and His Laws get in the way of the fight for White, Western, European Man.
Hey, why don't we give government money to abortionists to abort the "mud races?" [/sarcasm]
“So if Romney had been more liberal, he would have won?”
No, if Romney was more conservative he would have won.
Yeah! Let's abort the "mud races!" After all, if the White Race passes, G-d will disappear! It's not as if He actually exists, after all! [/sarcasm]
This is Cruz’s statement:
Once again Donald Trump has demonstrated that he hasnt seriously thought through the issues, and hell say anything just to get attention. On the important issue of the sanctity of life, whats far too often neglected is that being pro-life is not simply about the unborn child; its also about the mother and creating a culture that respects her and embraces life. Of course we shouldnt be talking about punishing women; we should affirm their dignity and the incredible gift they have to bring life into the world.
Notice what he says. We shouldn’t be talking about it, not that it won’t happen. Just sayin’.
“And what is it the President can do about abortion, you never said.”
The President not only leads the people, but also his party. Let’s see what he could do about abortion....
Hmm...
Still thinking.....
He could ask the party leadership to defund Planned Parenthood as part of the budget.
He could ask the party to create a law that guarantees religious institutions the right practice their first amendment rights without government interference.
If you are asking about whether the President can just declare abortion illegal, no, he cannot do that nor compel congress to do that. However, my two suggestions passes SCOTUS muster.
The goal should be to get rid of Common Core or and have the agenda for education led by someone who has conservative moral values. Ideally on both abortion and trans-genderism.
And what has Congress done regarding the destruction of our military?
This above sentence provides another example of the importance of education. Let me share a little gem I learned in civics. The president is the commander in chief in charge of the military. Congress has far less to almost no influence on policy as the president is at the top of the chain of command.
The presidency is an office where the people should demand the highest standard of character. As John Adams said. Because power corrupts, societys demands for moral authority and character increase as the importance of the position increases.
Richard Nixon who perhaps learned this the hard way said. "With all the power that a President has, the most important thing to bear in mind is this: You must not give power to a man unless, above everything else, he has character. Character is the most important qualification the President of the United States can have."
George Washington believed that a man's character mattered at whatever level of government. "Tis substantially true, that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. The rule indeed extends with more or less force to every species of free Government"
Whatever power Donald Trump has or doesn't have to use his morals to effect policy they are hardly irrelevant and should not be ignored.
And what is it the President can do about abortion, you never said.
I’ll take Civics for 400, Alex.
Well, Cruz is not a Republican, he’s a RINO Conservative. He’s also not a natural born Citizen of the U.S.
Jim Robinson, the host of FR say’s otherwise..
Go search his post. It’s recent and it shows how disingenuous the “Trump is not a conservative” people. He’s just not the radical version of Conservative you like. He’s a RINO conservative.
See if we have RINOs on the left that aren't conservative enough for the GOP mainstream conservatives, then we certainly have RINOs on the right that fall off the spectrum of the GOP yet cloak themselves in the Republican mantle.
I’m OK with that.
Close - but not quite. Trump is triangulating for the liberal Ascella States (that no Republican candidate will win in the General).
Excuse me.
This issue - plus his transgender bathroom position are just for the upcoming primaries.
Many of Trump's ardent supporters -right here on FR- have put everything on the table, they are "all in" for their candidate. Nothing he says or does will dissuade them from their unyielding support. They will rationalize, excuse, defend and twist themselves into knots - JUST TO SAVE THEIR "HONOR" AFTER MAKING SO MANY OVER THE TOP DEFENSES of their nutty, unpredictable, childish, unqualified, liberal candidate.
They'll post stupid Photoshopped pictures just to prove their undying support for Trump.
Many of them are - like Trump - brain dead.
Believe me.
Very..very...very...
Since when did donald become a conservative?
In other words, he can't do anything DIRECTLY about abortions.
And unless the SC is going to overturn abortion, it remains legal in all 50 States!
Want to try again?
What do you think is a bigger problem for you, your own sins or someone elses? Maybe God is using Islam to judge us for murdering our children just like He used Babylon to punish Israel for murdering theirs.
