Trump: I would change GOP platform on abortion
CNN ^ | 04/21/16 | David Wright

Donald Trump said Thursday he would change the Republican Party platform's position on abortion to include exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

Trump made the remarks during a town hall on the "Today" show on NBC on Thursday morning when host Savannah Guthrie asked him about abortion exceptions.

"The Republican platform every four years has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child should not be infringed," Guthrie said. "And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the (abortion) exceptions that you have?"

"Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely," Trump said. "For the three exceptions, I would."

Currently, the Republican platform abortion policy reads: "We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

I understand it very well from a ground level political perspective. Abortion, gay marriage, porn, etc are issues that simply aren’t as important to a growing number of Americans. It’s reality.

That's the very problem, though: "counting noses" (i.e. doing opinion polls) is a terrible way to decide what's morally right to do (or support), and what's morally wrong. When we face Christ at the end, we won't be judged by what was politically expedient, or by what other people did or didn't believe. We'll be judged on what we said and did (cf. Revelation 20:12-15).

I’m looking for ways to win the White House.

By making ourselves more like the enemy? Usually, we want to defeat the enemy because we want to UNDO... or at least AVOID... the evil they do. This practice of "feeding other people to the alligator in the hopes that it'll eat you last" really needs to stop.

Cruz, Santorum, Huckabee, et al aren’t going to cut it.

Cruz, Santorum, the Dalai Lama, the Pope, Rev. Franklin Graham, Ronald Reagan, etc., are all IRRELEVANT to the point at hand. Trump, for no morally good reason, is supporting a weakening of the GOP stance against abortion... and that's wrong, no matter who likes or dislikes that fact, or who votes for it or doesn't vote for it. It's also politically stupid: anyone who thinks that they'll "buy votes" by freeing up abortion is only doing a favor to those who would never vote for anyone other than a liberal, anyway.

I don’t know what the solution is, but having these things as planks in the party just mean further marginalization on the national stage.

This is simply wrong. Those who object to the "strict" (i.e. the only morally sane) view on abortion (i.e. it's never morally permissible) are those who ALREADY HATE US. Look around: the idea of trying to appease the "moderates" by giving the Libs some of what they want is as spectacularly stupid as trying to placate Islamic terrorists by agreeing to implement "some small and reasonable compromises" with Sharia law.

Don’t shoot the messenger.

I'm not shooting anyone. I'm pointing out a morally wrong position by Trump, and I'm pointing out a logically and morally incoherent compromise by some Trump supporters as they try to defend the indefensible.

Of course, it would make the percentage less, if only rape/incest babies were destroyed, but if you ever want to do some research, look into the women who both kept [and aborted] their babies conceived through rape.

http://www.lifenews.com/2014/09/09/rape-survivors-keeping-the-baby-doesnt-prolong-the-suffering/

ABORTION is the most violent action toward a woman as it both violates her and kills HER baby, so answering a violent rape with a more violent action, is not the best answer. The mother will live with that killing for the rest of her life.

Also YouTube has lots on this topic. Very touching stories of mothers who kept their babies through rape/incest.

And tell me how St. Cruz would handle abortion and transgender issues as President.

He would wave his finger at the American People and say 'that is bad'.

Another point: do you honestly believe that Trump will somehow get a pass from the same hostile media?

No. No one who is not a Democrat will get a pass from this media.

Trump has shown me that he is able to flummox and overcome them through sheer force of personality and his mastery of social media. Ted has not shown me that.

And if you were anti-abortion, you believe that abortion is murder, yet you St. Cruz zealots don’t want to punish the mother for having an abortion!

Kaisch would drop so fast after he was nominated it would make your head spin!

We know the polls are rigged to get the individual nominated who the Democrats want to run against!

It ain’t some political plank that is the problem. It’s the understanding and the moral, constitutional commitment of the people taking the oath.

“No person shall be deprived of life without due process of law.”

“No State shall deprive any person of life without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

And if abortion is made illegal would you punish the mother for having one or not?

If not, I don't want to hear about the claims that abortion is murder since St. Cruz doesn't believe in punishing the murderer!

“The President can’t do anything about abortion, but the religious zealots keep making that a litmus test for being a President.”

That’s part of Conservatism. It’s those voters who put the Republican over the top.

>> Ted has not shown me that.

Ted HAS shown me that; I take it you’re not from Texas, or you would have witnessed the Senate primary between Cruz and heavily favored David Dewhurst. Ted put on a clinic in how to doggedly master a favored ruthless establishment candidate.

It’s Trump who is lacking. Trump has run from confrontation with the candidates, wherever possible. Ted never has. And that “run away” tactic will play poorly in the general.

As well, Trump is forceful on the stump where he is in control, but an inarticulate loose cannon in debates and one-on-one with the press.

These issues are why the GOP has become a joke of a Party!

The religious zealots go around demanding litmus tests on these issues, the establishment Republicans give lip service to being against knowing that nothing can be done about them in the real world.

A useless platform, since the Party cannot do anything about it.

How about a platform that states abortion is murder and should be punished as murder?

2) Don't you dare presume to tell me what my position on anything is. Ask, or STFU.

If you noticed that some were against punishing the mother, then you must have read all of Mrs. Don-o’s posts explaining why punishing the mother doesn’t work. FR search function isn’t the most user friendly, but it does work.
