Trump: I would change GOP platform on abortion
CNN ^ | 04/21/16 | David Wright

Posted on 04/21/2016 10:32:44 AM PDT by writer33

Donald Trump said Thursday he would change the Republican Party platform's position on abortion to include exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

Trump made the remarks during a town hall on the "Today" show on NBC on Thursday morning when host Savannah Guthrie asked him about abortion exceptions.

"The Republican platform every four years has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child should not be infringed," Guthrie said. "And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the (abortion) exceptions that you have?"

"Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely," Trump said. "For the three exceptions, I would."

Currently, the Republican platform abortion policy reads: "We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

I understand it very well from a ground level political perspective. Abortion, gay marriage, porn, etc are issues that simply aren’t as important to a growing number of Americans. It’s reality. I’m looking for ways to win the White House. Cruz, Santorum, Huckabee, et al aren’t going to cut it. I don’t know what the solution is, but having these things as planks in the party just mean further marginalization on the national stage. Don’t shoot the messenger.

-—Good - the GOP won’t win on the bathroom issue.
.
.
.
Exactly. The left loves trolling these issues to the right, and the right falls for it over and over again.

They will give up the war to fight an insignificant battle.

Sun Tzu teaches never attack directly. Always stage an insignifcant attack to distract. When your opponent moves his resources to defend the insignificant position, then you attack your main target.

The left does this very well to the right. They will throw out something like gay wedding cakes and bathrooms and the right will all but fall all over themselves taking the bait, but in doing so, turn off 75% of the voters.

Time and time again I see it happen.

The far right... standing on principle... losing the battle. Maybe it’s better to win the war and get HALF of what you want, instead of losing the war and getting NOTHING of what you want.

In Trumps case, his agenda is to bring back 90% of what I want. I’ll settle for that, the other 10% is waaaayyy down on my priority list.

The question posed to Trump was not about the doctor who performed the abortion.

But you knew that.

FR is going just wild over this (and you should note that GW Bush had the same exceptions in his pro-life position) and there's the bathroom thing. Have a look on the Net and see where anyone else is going as crazy over this as FR. The moderators should come in and freeze 90% of these excessive, hysterical threads. I disagree with Trump on the bathrooms and even on these exceptions on abortion, but it doesn't change the fact that I still support him. Clearly, this is a slow news day for people to be getting this worked up. (*sigh*) Nice, ham-handed dismissal of opponents, there...

You don't think there's a possibility that Trump is MORALLY WRONG on this issue, and that people are upset about the GOP front-runner lowering the moral bar (perhaps permanently, since raising it is fiercely hard) for the entire GOP?

Example: suppose Trump were to personally approve of one, particular abortion. Would that "change anything on a grand scale, politically"? After all, 1.5 million children are dying by abortion in the USA every year... what's one more? Answer: it's catastrophic... not because of the statistics or political numbers or because of the number of words typed about it on blogs. It's catastrophic because it's the unjustified consent to the death of one innocent, whereas the consent to that single murder wasn't there before. It's a change from "all life is sacred" to "that person over there can be murdered with impunity, and I approve this message".

Rebecca Kiessling, a lady who was conceived in rape, puts it succinctly: "The people who want 'a little exception for rape and incest' are really walking up to me and saying, 'If I had my way, you'd be dead right now.'"

...and you seriously suggest that people are upset about this out of simple BOREDOM?

Look, he already handles the rape problem by building the southern wall. For incest, he can dig a moat around West Virginia. And for the life of the mother, I always heard the tie goes to the runner.

The reason “for the life of the mother” exception would kill many innocent children.

Would kill some mothers too. But I guess that’s ok.

Win it-the White House-for what? What about the day the left outnumbers us on the illegal issue? What will we let that go to save? What will be left for an opposition to oppose?

Why are you jumbling all those issues into one?

Trump: I would change GOP platform on abortion

The republicans have only one platform. And that's caving in on issues. Trump is not solid on the abortion issue but neither have the republicans.

I am a crossover voter.

There is no way in hell I would ever support a candidate that says my wife and I would have to keep and raise a child because my wife was gang raped by a group of Muslims or anyone for that matter.

You far right religious folks are just damn nuts.

Thank you. Well said!

“You are a complete a-hole and zealot.”

Coming from a loser tRump supporter I take that as a compliment. Believe me when I say I think worse of you than that.

My blood pressure is better than it’s ever been. Laughing, which I’ve been doing a lot of lately around here, is really good for that. I expect it to get even better over the next few months. You, on the otherhand, should see a doctor.

And was it the Democrats or Republicans that just gave funding to Planned Parenthood in December?

Both!

I find it weird that Trump got so few votes in New York.

Don’t those people vote? So a relatively small number of voters results in a huge number of delegates??

Cruz got more actual votes in Wisconsin than Trump did in New York, and Trump acts like he’s the nominee already.

“Donald J. Trump got fewer votes in New York than I got in Wisconsin, and yet the delegate rules give Donald many more delegates for winning New York than I got for winning Wisconsin… You don’t hear me up here complaining and whining.” – Ted Cruz”

But since he seems to be confident now, at least his true colors are beginning to show.

We thought they were orange... turning a little blue now.

I said it all went boom the day Trump said the mothers who murder their children should be punished - then immediately walked it back within mere hours.

Trumpists laughed. They will continue to laugh.

But true conservatives will hold the line at abortion. Your either against abortion or it’s no big deal.

Changing tagline
