Donald Trump said Thursday he would change the Republican Party platform's position on abortion to include exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.
Trump made the remarks during a town hall on the "Today" show on NBC on Thursday morning when host Savannah Guthrie asked him about abortion exceptions.
"The Republican platform every four years has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child should not be infringed," Guthrie said. "And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the (abortion) exceptions that you have?"
"Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely," Trump said. "For the three exceptions, I would."
Currently, the Republican platform abortion policy reads: "We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

His base is so star-struck that they are incapable of being offended.
He’s the Bernie of the right.
Both Trump and Sanders pander and promise, and their bases swallow it whole. (Sanders may also believe his tripe; he’s been spouting it for decades. Trump’s just an opportunist.)
Think.
There are zero percent abortions being stopped now. ZERO.
And that will continue unless judges overturn Roe/Wade.
Whether a candidate supports exceptions or not doesn’t change that one bit and hasnt for 45 years.
So voting for more Republicans that won’t do anything is the answer? I don’t think so.
Those not on the Trump Train, naturlich.
“Has anybody told Phylis Schafley?”
And Franklin Graham? And Jerry Falwell’s son?
You didn’t get the memo. Social conservatism is dead. It’s all about a wall now.
lol
but, but, but... the WALL! He said he will build THE WALL!!! There’s that! Yup, there’s stiiiiiill the wall...
Okay, so he said there’s going to be a yuuuge gate in the wall, er... and maybe it won’t be quite as high as he originally said.... um... I mean what, with the cost of mortar these days... uh... but he’s going to build it, I tell you! He even said so!...
So you wouldn’t agree to save 98% of abortions now, and fight for the 2% later? It’s 100% or they can all die!
Abortion:
Pro-Choice, Very Pro-Choice, would not ban partial-birth-abortions.
Seems our choices may come down to:
Very Liberal Longtime Democrat -vs- Very Liberal New Republican
Two points to make here.
1) I do not agree with him on this position.
2) I have voted for probably a hundred Republicans who held the identical position since gaining the age of majority.
And I’m sure just about all of you have too.
The alternative is a Democrat who has no qualms about chopping them up in the womb during month #9.
It’s dead with or without the wall. the last two Presidential elections confirmed that.
Rapists are a very protected class btw. Not that the GOP has done any thing about it, or ever will
Then i wont support him
[Its harmful to keep that language in the platform, because not only is there zero chance that a democratic process could ever lead to rape/incest abortions being banned, it can be used to attack Republicans EVEN THOUGH THERES NO CHANCE SUCH A LAW COULD EVER PASS.]
What language?
Yes he did. And later called it the worst public policy thing he had ever done in his pro life book.
I note that you failed to answer my simple "yes or no" question.
Thus, you're apparently not interested in advancing the discussion.
If you have additional comments to add, that's fine, but perhaps you could begin by answering the simple question...
Free Republic...
Funny, I remember There used to be a conservative website with that name.
“Those who hope this trump statement will affect him can keep dreaming”
You miss the point, stanne.
Perhaps if Trump shift left and positions himself as moderate on social issues, he makes himself MORE palatable to the left. The issue is whether conservatives should support him.
I’ve been saying since day one, Trump shows signs of shifting left. I like his conservative platform, but his history makes me nervous.
In a sane world, Trump would be the reasonable Democrat nominee, similar to JFK. Cruz would be the Republican nominee. And Hillary and Bernie would be competing to run Venezuela.
