Target Corp. made it clear that transgender people in its stores are welcome to use the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity.
The statement Tuesday by the Minneapolis-based retailer comes amid debates in many state legislatures over restricting public restroom use to the sex listed on a persons birth certificate.
While many of those conversations have centered around restrooms in public schools and government buildings, Target appears to be one of the first big-box retailers to take a proactive stance in declaring its position on the matter when it comes to its own restrooms.
While they may not be technically public, restrooms in stores are often the most easily accessible and widely available options outside of peoples homes and workplaces.
Targets position also extends to its fitting rooms.
Inclusivity is a core belief at Target, the company said in a statement on its corporate website. Its something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.
Molly Snyder, a Target spokeswoman, said it is not a new policy, but the retailer wanted to clarify its position given the questions it has received from both customers and employees amid the national debate. Executives sent e-mail to store leaders earlier this week to convey the message.
Its a restatement of a policy, she said. Its just us being very overt in stating it.

“... treated equally ...”
You aren’t treating women equally when you let biological men use the ladies room.
This decision comes from the extremely liberal Minnesota.
I’m laughing.
Boycotts won’t work, you gotta rub their ridiculous liberalism INTO their face like a dog that just took a dump on the carpet.
We gotta work out an “opposite identify day” and just use the opposite bathroom nation-wide at (list of liberal places here).
So every starbucks, target, Whole Foods, etc... on May the 3rd (turd) we all use the opposite bathroom.
We were at Philmont Scout Ranch the year women and girls started coming to the Boy Scouts. Showers are days apart and only a few are hot. There were no sepearate facilities yet. The showers at Cimmaroncito I think were hot and the women were hogging them. Dad had enough, in towel and boots he gave them the two minute warning and went in and they came right out. We got our showers and wet back to camp. That was in the 70s.
Stopped shopping Target years ago, but can’t remember why. So all is well in my world.
But it’s good customer service.
Another reason not to shop at Target.
I’m fine with this. I’m not fine with just any man in the ladies room. But a poor person struggling with gender dysphoria, who has been told that maybe trying to live as a woman would help, should use the restroom where they feel the most comfortable.
We need to understand that it isn’t fun to feel you are one gender when you are the other. Nor is it their fault. The transitioning — acting like the other gender -— is the ONLY thing the medical community is offering. It only helps 50% of the time OR LESS but some think that is enough reason to give it a try. Most people blindly do whatever a doctor says. Please forgive these terribly ill people for trying what some idiot doctor says.
The truly affected will not use the restroom to rape and assault. There are so few of them that your chance of peeing alongside someone with different parts is minuscule.
What we need to fight is the “anything goes” laws where full on men can use ladies’ rooms. That is far worse and affects every woman from the helpless four year olds to the helpless 90 year olds. We need to protect our sisters, daughters, and grandmothers.
I do remember that. That guy was illegally in the women’s room. He would have done evil regardless of laws.
I align with dogs ... I’m gonn’a pee on the floor
I cut down on my shopping at Target when they banned the Salvation Army at Christmas time. Stoopid, Stoopid people at the executive suite there.
I’m supposed to buy a PC there tomorrow.
I’ve boycotted so many companies that at some point, you have to say “for now, this is the America we live in and we can’t stop living because of a bunch of miscreants bullying companies”
Believe me, Chick Fill A has 2 blocks of people waiting every day in Manhattan for their food. Even dems know you can’t win them all.
Speaking of which, where does Sanders shop.
If I do go to Target, I am going to ask to use the ladies room OR just walk right in. Should be good for a laugh.
So a rotund and hairy man such as myself can go in, singing “I Enjoy Being a Girl,” and try on bikinis in the former ladies’ changing rooms, and no one at Target is going to say or do squat.
Im sure they will have no problem if I align my identity with a target employee and use the employee restrooms...
It’s over for me and Target.
They have been on my bad list for a few years now anyway. Was looking for a religious anniversary card and they had none, but had homosexual anniversary cards right down where children could see them.
But with this they signed their own JC Penny’s styled death warrant, in a business sense of course.
I’d like to see a counterstrike in which everyone else declares Target to be an LBGT store for LGBTs only, and Target tanks completely. If they think there is such a boost to thier business by catering to this tiny section of the population at the expense of everyone else, let them prove it - without our business.
I for one won’t be going there again. Nobody is going to force their deviant behavior on me.
There are too many other stores I can shop in and online is better. No lines no freaks.
Well now here is a place wih real deep pockets.
I’ve gone in maybe twice in the last year and without exaggerating I was shocked at how empty the stores were. I have a feeling the managers responsible for sales volume were as well.
“If a woman identifies as a man, how would she use the urinal?”
As a small wash basin for her hands.
