Gov. Nathan Deal said the uproar in North Carolina and Mississippi over new laws that critics say curb gay rights should give supporters of the religious liberty measure in Georgia second thoughts, and warned that hes willing to pull out the veto pen again next year if similar legislation lands on his desk.
In his first interview since his veto two weeks ago of House Bill 757, Deal said Tuesday hes concerned religious conservatives who plan to revive the measure next year will put Georgia through another contentious debate.
I dont want to go through the same process all over again. Ive made my position very clear. I tried to write a very thoughtful veto message, he said. It expressed my concerns and it expressed my reasons for vetoing it. And those reasons wont change in my mind....

We live in a Corporatist state.
And I’ll pull the NO VOTE EVER lever on his ass if he ever comes up for office again here in Georgia. Take that to the frigging bank, Nathan.
North Carolina’s bathroom bill was not about religious liberty.
I wish it would stop being framed that way.
It has nothing to do with religion.
It is about the safety and security of women and girls in their own restrooms and locker rooms.
let the bathroom rapes begin. what a sick country we’ve become.
wearing women’s clothes when you’re a man is mentally abnormal!!
wanting a part of you body that works perfectly fine removed is abnormal!!
who is going to say this, who has power?
would be nice if Trump said it’s absurd!!
I KNOW the polls are with us, that’s why I see none.
What he meant to say is I have no backbone and will bow down to the lunatic left. Nathan Deal, once a Democrat, always a Democrat. Good riddance after this term.
With limp-spined GOPe “leaders” like this, it’s hard to imagine how we’re losing the culture war...
What’s happening is that all of these profitable, successful companies are turning on their voting coalition partners who have kept pulling the lever for Republicans for the past four decades to keep the Democrat Socialist looters at bay.
Essentially they have blown-up the Reagan Coalition. Cultural Conservatives no longer have any reason to come out and vote in their defense. None of us want to live in Sodom and Gomorrah that just happens to have a free-market economic system.
The other shoe has not dropped in Georgia yet. We are still waiting for him to veto the latest bill supporting the 2nd amendment. It’s coming.
Agreed and it is being driven by the American Left who SCREECH the loudest against Corporate America....
Freedom of association is no longer legal.
As far as marriage is concerned, pastors will really need to tighten up membership to stop infiltrators.
What a coward.
Nathan Deal is a scared little suck-up. He’ll do anything to avoid bad press. A year or so ago when a winter storm sneaked up on Georgia and people were stranded, he caught some flak. In a knee jerk reaction he started ordering snow equipment, and now we’re probably better prepared for once-in-a-blue-moon storms than many northeastern states.
A couple of has-been singers, a fat flop-movie producer, and a beaver showing actress has decided to boycott North Carolina, as well as a couple of businesses. Not exactly Armageddon.
I’d venture to say a lot more people - including north carolineans - are pleased with the bill.
Deal is a wuss for caving to corporate threats.
Enjoy being primaried, retard. (That is, unless you pull some Calvinball type shenanigans saying that you still get the nomination with less than 10% of the vote.)
I just thought this morn, remember when business was boycotted for immoral direction. Now business in targeting states for taking a moral stand.
Lester G. Maddox looks better ever year!
100 % ageed. It was about common sense.
The Atlanta Urinal Constipation is lying when it discusses “laws that discriminate against gays & lesbians. It does no such thing. That law would have prohibited people from using a restroom that does not correspond to their birth gender. It applies that the same to all.
We should consider what will be the reality without this law. Perverts will invade womens restrooms and locker rooms under the false flag of transgender equality.
Also, “Preserve Freedom of Conscience.” Religious freedom is one off shoot of this.
