(CNSNews.com) - "I've been around guns all my life. I know how to use them, and arming our people on our military bases and allowing them to carry concealed, privately owned weapons -- I do not recommend that as a force protection," Army Chief of Staff General Mark Milley told Congress on Thursday.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) asked Milley what the Army is doing to provide force protection at military bases and facilities in the United States, following last summer's attack on a Marine recruiting center and a Navy Reserve facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee, that killed four Marines and one sailor.

A good, kind, and generous man in private.

Very much so...but if you knew him well enough, you also knew he was a little geeky.

Loved gadgets of all kinds, which makes me smile, as I can imagine him with all the smart phones and toys we have available now.

He is one of three officers that influenced my career the most...COL David J. Anderson and BG Salvatore P.Chidichomo are the other two.

I visited his grave this past summer at Arlington.

He'd be proud to know he got a prime spot.

As for the "perfumed prince"...he looks good on paper, but he is one of those that spent more time in schools, collecting all the various pins and badges, than in actual work within the specialties he went to the schools for.

In other words, all hat...no cattle.

I did not serve under him and fortunately, did not know him as a young officer.

Had I, I would have snatched a knot in his shavetail ass.

thanks. I don’t know if the military people in these places are combat soldiers are paper pushers without much shooting experience.

I don’t know that much about the military and guns, i’m ashamed to say.

1983 Beirut Marine Barracks Bombing
The sentries at the gate were operating under rules of engagement which made it very difficult to respond quickly to the truck. Sentries were ordered to keep their weapons at condition four (no magazine inserted and no rounds in the chamber). Only one sentry, LCpl Eddie DiFranco, was able to load and chamber a round. However, by that time the truck was already crashing into the building's entryway.

In WW2, 18 year old son drafted off the street were given a 1911 yet this same expectation cannot be had for professional troops?

How insulting is that?

QUOTE from article
"And a lot of people died in the process of that, but that was a very fast-moving event. And I am not convinced from what I know that carrying privately owned weapons would have stopped that individual."
somebody in our military is apparently not spending nearly enough personal time at the range... or he WOULD be convinced.

he makes a comment about 8 minutes being a pretty good "response" time at fort hood... so there it is.

If in proximity, I think I could muster a 2-3 minute response time at the worst and 45 seconds or less is likely. I know a dozen men who could make that calculation and make the move. EVERY military person should be qualified and trained in hand to hand, and firearms use... regularly... or they should go back to civilian life.

OUR military personnel should have weapons at the ready at all times.

10 rounds, 10 centimeters, 10 meters, 10 seconds (1 mag)

Funny if not so pitifully sad - a General who supposedly believes our military can protect/project force around the world, doesn’t think that individuals in the military ought to be able to protect themselves. I know how he votes....

Ask those in Tennessee who lost their lives because they weren’t armed. That is one thing Cruz wants to change. ARM recruiters.

Don't trust your men? Then they don't trust you, either.

Interesting, thanks.

Yes, I knew GEN Starry in his post-Army career, including when he & other members of the board of Maxwell Labs made a takeover of the company, ousted its CEO, and he became chairman. He successfully led the effort to redirect the company - now Maxwell Technologies - from govt. to commercial markets.

GEN & Mrs. Starry were church & social friends of my parents. My father also was career Army (O-6 / WII), and GEN Starry & he died four months apart. My parents also are interred at ANC.

I hereby move that this bag of gas be made to explain to the widows and orphans of all current victims of stateside shootings why it was right to keep them defenseless. I further move he be made to explain the same to any and all future victims.

And for the record, I was under the employ of the father of Private William Long at one time, and I can tell you right now that this gent would not enjoy having to explain to Mister Long why his son couldn’t be trusted to defend himself.

I can see why a REMF would be nervous about having armed honest people around him. Makes perfect sense. They might decide to do something about the guys who are really trying to screw them.
