MSNBC's Joe Scarborough thinks House Speaker Paul Ryan, who will arrive in Cleveland this July as chairman of the Republican National Convention, has a better chance of becoming the GOP presidential nominee than Ted Cruz.
"Ted Cruz will never be the nominee," the former Florida congressman said matter-of-factly on his program Wednesday morning.
"You don't think he's the second most likely nominee?" a panelist responded.
"No. Not even close," Scarborough shot back.
The same panelist then asked Scarborough "who's more likely to be the nominee?"
"You know what? Paul Ryan," he responded. "You name the list. [Cruz] right now the guy is loathed. He is loathed in DC in a way that Donald Trump is not loathed."
Scarborough continued, "I know a lot of the establishment hates Donald Trump, but Ted Cruz is the devil that they know and he's not going to win the nomination."
"Maybe Ted Cruz is the most wonderful human being in the world when he's in the backyard throwing a baseball with his next-door neighbors and barbecuing, but he is not though on TV a likable guy," he added.
"He's not gong to do it," the MSNBC anchor said of Cruz securing the nomination. "So it's going to be Donald Trump or somebody else."
Scarborough's comments come on the heels of Cruz's huge victory Tuesday night in the Wisconsin primary. The Texas senator carried nearly 50 percent of the vote and billed his victory as a pivotal moment in the Republican battle for the nomination.
"Tonight is a turning point. It is a rallying cry," Cruz declared at a primary night watch party in Milwaukee.
The first-term senator now trails Trump by 226 delegates in the race to reach the 1,237 needed to secure the nomination.
Why would Trump make a deal with Cruz? He is just as likely to cut a deal with Kasich or Rubio.
That will be the quickest way to a third party.
Didn’t they know that a little dab will do ya?
I hope the RNC does not have the power to stop Trump from being the nominee. I hope that the only thing that can stop Trump is a clear majority of people deciding otherwise in honest elections. (And it appears to me that in honest elections, the majority of votes go to Trump.)
If it is the case, that you are right, and that the unelected RNC has all the power, and can select who they will for the nomination, and we the people have only the illusion of having a voice, it is all the more reason for Mr. Trump to stay in the race so that we can stop pretending what we think and what we want matters to those in charge. Then we will have to decide what to do about it. For the sake of our representative Republic, I hope we do have the gumption and determination to clean house if it becomes clear those in power are arrogant despots who think they have no duty to do the will of the people.
Against Ryan, Hillary could get elected from a jail cell.
Rove would cream in his pants he’d be so happy.
“Thanks for the reminder, I had completely forgotten about the slang from the 50s.
Technically, we’re both right. However, in the context of the original post, I don’t think Ted Cruz was being compared to The Fonz.”
The term was used in the same context much later than just the ‘50s.
Be careful there. You are exposing and projecting your own prejudices in the last paragraph.
Why would Reagan make a deal with Bush? The vitriol in that campaign was as intense, if somewhat different.
Thanks for the warning. One can never be too cautious nowadays.
I don't believe Trump has gotten 50% in any primary. And Cruz (& others) have long beaten him head-to-head in theoretical polls. If it weren't for the YUUUGE field, he wouldn't have made it past South Carolina.

There are probably a bunch of. Hispanics on this forum like me who don’t appreciate the term. It was popular to use it in the 1950s.
I do agree with the lyin’ part though.
