If you've flown recently, you may have seen a TSA agent holding a tablet that pops up an arrow that tells you which line you should stand in. That little app is called a "Randomizer" and TSA agents use it to determine who is subject to the random searches that are a part of the TSA Pre-check program. Heres a video of it in action:

You wouldn't know it, because it looks incredibly simple, but it appears that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) paid IBM $47,400 for the app, part of a larger $336,000 payout. IBM has not yet responded to a request for more information.

stop the Islamic influx/invasion/infiltration and give the nice TSA folks something useful to do instead
we don’t want the Police State any longer!
What an Fân rip off. Even I could write an app to have a cheesy cheap looking arrow randomly point right or left and the press of a button.
Yup. That was my first thought. Buy a couple of dice. Set a number. If less than that number, you go in one line, if greater, go to the other. I do the same thing with a 5-line shell script. What a bunch of worthless drones.
First, disable the camera on the opposite side and I’d might believe it.
TSA are WORSE than low bidder contractor. They are government employees.
I remember the days when you could get on an airplane without removing your shoes and the only check you got was walking through a metal detector.
Radical muslims have caused all this.
“stop the Islamic influx/invasion/infiltration and give the nice TSA folks something useful to do instead...”
How about some honest work somewhere off the government payroll?
So the app calls a built-in rand() function then flips an arrow left or right. That’s what, about 5 lines of code? Nice contract. Of course to a Federal government use to squandering billions, an amount under $50K probably looks like 50 cents.
Ridiculous. I could write something similar in good old Basic in a matter of minutes.
Tell the Israelis they are doing it all wrong by profiling and questioning. They should move into the future and randomize! That’s the wave of the future...... if you have one.
yes, but your randomizer doesn’t cost the taxpayers $47,000
so it is UNACCEPTABLE
agreed , yes indeed, and good for them too!!!
(but if any remain on the govt payroll, we can STILL help them find jobs that actually benefit us ... forest care, national parks guides or cleaning crews, lots and lots of additional things... better than messing us around at the airport!)
How about harvesting lettuce?
“How about harvesting lettuce?”
TSA employees: 55,600+ (2014)
It’s clear that we’re not getting value for the $7 billion we’re paying the TSA annually for airport security.
I’m pretty sure the “Magic 8-Ball” app is free (and just as effective).
Would that be random or pseudorandom?
