Donald Trump is likely on the verge of losing the Republican primary, falling short of the number of delegates required to win the presidential nomination. But, as bullies are wont to do, Trump is now trying desperately to change the rulesto argue that the nomination should go not to the candidate who wins 1,237 delegates but to whoever comes closest.
Whats wrong with that argument? Electing a U.S. president is not a schoolyard game, where goalposts change when bullies whine. Theres a reason a candidate has to make it to 1,237 votes to win the nomination. Each partys goal is to put forth a nominee whom the partys members, represented by their elected delegates, believe will best reflect the partys collective judgmenta determination possible only when the level of support is clear and convincing. Thats why both parties set a benchmark, the political equivalent of the tape at the finishing line of a race, sufficient to establish the partys preference. In a hundred-yard dash, a runner who beats the others but who can only manage 95 yards doesnt go home with a medal.
At the convention this summer, assuming that none of Trumps primary opponents will have reached that magic number either, the delegates will vote on who they think best represents the Republican Party until a single candidate does receive the necessary votes. It is this candidate, the one who is able actually to cross the finish line, who will win the right to become the partys nominee. That person could be Trump, but it probably wont be.

Well, I’ll keep an eye out then. I’m surprised and disappointed in that some would encourage violence.
The same reason you are seeing anti Cruz articles, it takes your mind off the real issues which are not being debated..Just read my blog or thesis.
That same NE fake news article was a diversion. Because this months issue also contains Blake Shelton cheating on Gwen with 4 women. Past issues Hildabeast is dying of brain cancer..the Green Martians have landed....ROFOL.
“Really? Ive certainly missed the FR calls to violence you refer to.”
Posts are promptly deleted and a few posters Zotted, if I recall correctly.
Trump will turn the Convention into his own Apprentice Show, rating will be better than the World Series, World Cup and Super Bowl COMBINED....tv ads will cost more than any in history....IT WILL BE FREE POLITICAL ADVERTIZING FOR TRUMP ON TV TIME 24/7 AND HE WILL MAKE MONEY DURING IT.
HELL HE MIGHT BALANCE THE BUDGET WITH ALL THAT DOUGH.
It will be the Greatest Show on Earth.
“The people are in no mood to be dictated to by their betters, and will show their displeasure by abandoning the party if they attempt to shove another milquetoast RINO down our throats at the convention.”
I concur.
If Trump doesn’t have a clear lead (as in a few votes short of the magic number, which I don’t know), I do think Cruz will be the smarter-choice compromise candidate, in that he is both an outsider and very conservative.
But the RNC has never failed to disappoint me, so I am betting on Ryan or Romney or a cup of soggy Cheerios to be nominated.
I am tired of having the news reported and analysed by people who can’t think straight when talking about Trump. Just because a candidate thinks they ought to be the nominee if they get a plurality does not mean the candidate advocates the rules being changed so that they win automatically on first vote without a majority.
“Trump will turn the Convention into ...the Greatest Show on Earth.”
Best Bread & Circus show since Caligula!
Agreed!
Trump at a brokered Convention is like having a Main Battle Tank at a demolition derby.
Reagan had extremely high negatives also. The media hated him and were afraid he would start ww3....instead he WON IT.
Cruz is currently imploding. He has gone off message. He is either ignoring his adviser or they are bad advisers. He should have completely ignored the National Enquirer this last week. The story has been around for months, and likely would have blown over as just another political attack. Instead Ted drug it kicking and screaming into everyone’s living rooms just in time for Easter Sunday get-togethers... not smart.
The Enquirer has a formulaic pattern they follow when exploiting a political sex scandal. First they put out a teaser issue which is short on facts. Then they let the hapless politician drive up interest in the story. Then they keep dripping a little more out each week. The first issue sells barely more than normal, but by the time the second and third issues come out, they have people hooked and they start selling millions of additional little newsprint weeklies at $5 a piece.
The Enquirer doesn't care about the contest, the candidates or the country. They just want to sell their magazine. They will drag this out as long as possible, giving just a little more out every week. If Cruz keeps reacting the way he has in the last week; it is all over. There will be no “plurality” by convention time.
Neither Trump nor Cruz will be the Republican nominee......watch and see.
If neither one is chosen the Republicans will lose the general election as well as the Senate! The ruling class is so desperate to keep their perks and power that they will gladly let someone as corrupt as Hillary win if they think she will maintain the status quo.
It is not a con to suggest that a candidate who has actually gone through all of the debates, news conferences, town halls, and has actually stumped for votes should be higher on the pecking order than those who have not.
Nor is it unusual at all to think a candidate with double the delegates of his closest rival should have a leg up on everyone else.
And finally, when a candidate has 90% of the delegates required in a race where they’ve been split not just 2 ways as with the democrats, but 4, 5, and 6 ways with the republicans, then that candidate has very good reason to suggest that he/she is the frontrunner and should be viewed that way.
No they have not had the same rules for 100 years. These were rules instituted by Mitt Romney four years ago.
That is not what we were told 4 years ago, when approximately 80% of the Republican base did not want Romney. We were told by the elites that a contested convention would be the most terrible thing that could happen to our party! The hypocrisy of the elites and the inability to remember 4 years ago on our part is astonishing!
On that we agree.
and they stand in direct opposition to the people of the United States.
Well, to at least half of the people. The other half loves their agenda.
There's your trouble. Don't listen to the GOPe. Think for yourself.
Cruz has not changed? Then he always the establishment toady that he is now, just no longer wearing the mantle of “principled conservatism.” The elites have not lurched right, they are just using what they see as a more palatable front man to fool the base once again. I cannot fathom why anyone would support Cruz anymore, but otherwise intelligent people obviously do.
By the way, Cruz is not very likable. He is rather repellent. He won’t do well in the general at all.
Quote:
“A contested Convention will destroy the GOP completely. The GOP has done enough to destroy itself, and this will just see the whole thing collapse.
Well, then the next GOP Presidential primary after this “contested” one will be over quick. What with next to no one bothering to vote in it. America will have but one political party - the “Government Party” - and the Constitution and Bill of Rights will be applied as it benefits the Government/Media/Corporate Class. For the rest of us, not so much.
Sort of like it is now.....
We know that cruz cannot get the delegate count, there is no way he can win NY, NJJ, PA, RI, CT, MD, DE.
So OK he can’t get it . So what does cruz bring?
he brings the man who could take some delegates off Trump, thus giving the establishment their contested convention.
Would you agree thus far?
So now the establishment has their contested convention would you agree cruz has helped them to get what they want?
yes of course any sane person would and therefore a vote for cruz is giving the establishment what they want.
Now they have their convention do you honestly think the establishment are going to be happy with cruz?
Course not they will stab him in the back at the first chance.
Now where is that nonsense?
Now you have been corrected and have seen you were wrong would you want not retract your false information and admit that it is the establishment which are cheating and trying to change the rules yet again, or will you still be stubborn in your thinking and never admit you were wrong.
