Why Utah Mormons' distaste for Trump could turn a red state reluctantly blue
The Guardian ^ | 03-21-2016 | Sam Levin

The aversion to Donald Trump is so strong among Utah Mormons that if the Republican frontrunner secures the party’s presidential nomination, it could produce a general election outcome that has not happened in half a century: the state could go blue.

“The Bible says if you’ve got a wicked leader, the nation suffers,” said Chris Herrod, a former Utah state representative and a Utah campaign coordinator for Ted Cruz. “I’m not saying Donald Trump is wicked, but for most Utahns, the moral character of a leader makes a big difference.”

At the state’s high-stakes GOP caucuses on Tuesday, political experts say many conservative Mormon voters like Herrod will be motivated by their distaste for the real estate billionaire’s vulgar style, bombastic comments and outlandish anti-immigration policies – fueling an “anyone-but-Trump” mentality that has spread across the political spectrum in the very red state.

A new Deseret News/KSL poll found Trump would lose to Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders in Utah, while Kasich or Cruz would both win the state by sizeable margins against either Democrat.

However the large casinos in West Wendover must be for Salt Lake City folk who want to gamble because there aren’t many other people around there.

During the ride in the nchartered buses; from SLC to the border; folks can observe wonderful artwork in the salt along the north side of the highway.

I don’t think Mormons think for themselves.

I don't know 'bout that...

President Hugh B. Brown, counselor in the First Presidency said:

“I admire men and women who have developed the questing spirit, who are unafraid of new ideas as stepping stones to progress. We should, of course, respect the opinions of others, but we should also be unafraid to dissent – if we are informed. Thoughts and expressions compete in the marketplace of thought, and in that competition truth emerges triumphant. Only error fears freedom of expression. . .

This free exchange of ideas is not to be deplored as long as men and women remain humble and teachable. Neither fear of consequence or any kind of coercion should ever be used to secure uniformity of thought in the church. People should express their problems and opinions and be unafraid to think without fear of ill consequences. . . .

We must preserve the freedom of the mind in the church and resist all efforts to suppress it.”

But; then again; you might be right!

When our leaders speak, the thinking has been done. When they propose a plan--it is God's plan. When they point the way, there is no other which is safe. When they give direction, it should mark the end of controversy. God works in no other way. To think otherwise, without immediate repentance, may cost one his faith, may destroy his testimony, and leave him a stranger to the kingdom of God.

One thing everyone needs to know about Mormons, they are open border people.

I'd say!

It's embedded in the Romney family DNA!

I thought they were called Utes.

Nah; that's the OTHER College team's name.

Or these guys...

The gruesome be headings of some 40 Ute corpses in 1850,
heads stacked in boxes, and hung by their long hair
from the eves of buildings at Fort Utah,
has long been ignored,

“You didn’t see the Indians beheading the Mormons.”

Aside from the quote being bogus, the other problem was that this man was not the President of the Mormon Church in 1961. The next time you post a lie, at least check it out first.

It didn't pass the smell test and I was able to check it out with a couple of simple searches.

A well-written post, with actual facts about Mormons - something unusual here! There is so much made-up stuff by some, it is ridiculous. There’s enough real information about them that there’s no need to go to crazy extremes.

I was wondering why they were so pro-illegal - I thought it had to do with they had more success converting them. Your ideas/data makes more sense although it’s probably some of each.

Yes, I’ve only seen that picture about fifty billion times since this primary started, and my answer is pretty much the same every time.

No offense intended, but when you go and post a picture that’s typically included along with mockery and condescending comments, it’s tough not to read what you’re saying as mocking and condescending. You know, just FYI.

Having said that, do you want me to reply to your comment, or will we just end up yelling at each other?

I agree with you, it is likely some of each. My husband and I both have relatives and friends that are Mormon. I like and respect many of them. I do not discuss religion with them! My sister was or I should say is (she passed away) a Mormon and she told me some pretty out there things...as you say- no need to make things up!

this man was not the President of the Mormon Church in 1961

point out where I said he was

the quote being bogus...I was able to check it out with a couple of simple searches.

Wikipedia: In early 1961, Smith preached to a stake conference congregation in Hawaii: We will never get a man into space. This earth is man's sphere and it was never intended that he should get away from it. The moon is a superior planet to the earth and it was never intended that man should go there. You can write it down in your books that this will never happen

I could post more links which validate that the quote is accurate, but somehow I don't think you are truly interested in that.

I won't hold my breath waiting for you to apologize for calling me a liar - continue with your "simple searches".

I find it hard to believe that the citizens of Utah would follow anything Glenn Beck says. Yesterday Beck said that because Christians voted for Trump in the South, they were not listening to their God. We certainly can see the hatred in Glenn Beck’s heart with the statements he makes! And Glenn Beck is a Mormon???
