Trump Doubles Down on Theory Romney’s Not Really Mormon
National Review ^ | March 20, 2016 | Tom S. Elliott

Posted on 03/20/2016 11:53:00 AM PDT by reaganaut1

On Friday, Donald Trump questioned whether Mitt Romney is actually Mormon. “I have many friends that live in Salt Lake City — and by the way, Mitt Romney is not one of them,” Trump said during a Salt Lake City speech. ”Are you sure he’s a Mormon? Are we sure?”

This is the third time Trump has questioned the faith of one of his opponents, despite having criticized the practice of questioning other people’s faith, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos pointed out this morning during an interview with Trump. “Why do you keep doing it?” he asked.

Here’s Trump’s reply:

With Mitt Romney — well, first of all, with Mitt Romney, I was saying to the Mormons, Mormons are very smart people. And I said it in a joking way, but they can take it, you can take it any way you want. The Mormons are very smart people. I know many Mormons. I don’t think Mitt Romney is a smart person. I never have thought he was a smart person, but the Mormons are very smart people. So I said, are you sure he’s a Mormon? And I’m not going to change it because I think Mitt Romney has proven to be not a smart person. As far as Ted Cruz, he’s one of the greatest liars and biggest liars I have ever known. He lies about so much. He lies about things that he shouldn’t be lying about. He lies about things that don’t matter. I tell people, and I think that’s why Ted Cruz has lost the Evangelical vote, look what he did with Ben Carson, who has endorsed me. Look what he did to Ben Carson. He said Ben Carson in Iowa has left. He’s out of the campaign, vote for me.

You know that isn’t what Trump said.

I'd hate to point this out to you, but these were his exact words...

If they were not his actual words, pray tell, what did he say...?

“If he is the nominee I sit it out.”

Please don’t, that will cause a rift in the space-time continuum.

There he goes again. Bringing up ridiculous theories about other GOP folks. What is the purpose of Trump talking about Romney’s faith?

See, this is what is the problem with Donald Trump. The country is in debt up to our ears, under assault by forces inside and outside our borders, Christians are being persecuted, and the economy is in the doldrums.

And he talks about Mitt Romney’s Mormonism???????

Once again - please get serious.

On Friday, Donald Trump questioned whether Mitt Romney is actually Mormon.

Trump questioning Romney's faith? Lol...wow...people, seriously? It's a joke:

A. "Mormons are very smart people."
B. "I don’t think Mitt Romney is a smart person."
Therefore,
C. "So I said, are you sure he’s a Mormon?"
A pause...and then the audience says, "hahahaha...."

And the Trump Critics say in unison, "Trump is questioning Romney's faith."

Lol...I'm not sure which is funnier: Trump's lame attempt at humor at Romney's expense or the Trump critics' automatic and seemingly synchronized mis-reaction to it.

Strange days, indeed.

I can not get past his verbal skills. He starts speaking, stops, repeats a word, jumps to another subject, repeats, it is an odd speaking style.

I’ve read recent articles that put his verbal skills as 4th grade mentality.

That and attacking another’s faith... It all makes sense now.

It just amounts to gibberish.

And his defenders will say something like I don't care he's going to build a wall.

He says he is going to build a wall. They all say they are going to do a long list of things.

Trump has little control over his mouth or his mind.

Yeah you're right. He should have allowed himself to be Mitt's punching bag.

The Pope did not personally attack Trump. It was the media which misscharacterized the popes response and Trump found out about it but used it anyway.

Thousands including many Catholics thought they were responding via Trump in effect telling the pope to go to hell . But it was intended and used, as a left handed Trump endorsement. which the media not Trump engineered and Trump after learning the facts should have apologized and condemed this, instead used it.. Pope Francis responded to accusation loaded questions by a Reuters news agency reporter and did not believe those accusations. So the pope never mentioned Trumps name . Here in abstract; replied using the term One, to generalize his example and began with; If actually one said and continued with : One does, one did, one believes :It was meant to be a generalized position applied to anyone when answering the questions that were presented to him .Yet the US media turned this statement vy Pope Francis : Those that only focus on building walls and not bridges are not Christian. into: Those who build walls not bridges like Trump are not Christian. Turning a generalized position into a personal attack by no less the pope If they voted that way because of that reason They were mislead by machinations of the media not rejection of actions voters thought were made by the pope.

So you are saying if Trump gets his hands on the agencies of the federal government, he should use them against anyone who attacked him in the primaries? That would be too much like the current administration.

I'm saying that Mitt may have exposed himself as being part of a criminal conspiracy that needs to be investigated. The same with many media organizations.

I'm also saying that what's good for the goose may be (very) good for the gander.

I'm also saying that our enemies like to play hardball.

This from a site by a Mormon about The Book of Mormon:

Secret combinations flourished because, as Helaman tells us, the Gadianton robbers ‘had seduced the more part of the righteous until they had come down to believe in their works and partake of their spoils’ (Helaman 6:38)…even as today!” (Conference Report, April 1987, Ensign, May 1987, p. 4.)

Yeah, Latter-day Saints absolutely uphold secret combinations. All who cast ballots for Romney uphold secret combinations, for they are not rooted in constitutional principles of righteousness, but rather, are seduced to believe in the works of and partake of the spoils of the Gadianton robbers. Such robbers live in America and look and speak just like we do. Many are popular with the people, including Latter-day Saints.

Also take note:

“The sad and shocking story of what has happened in America in recent years must be told. Our people must have the facts. There is safety in an informed public. There is real danger in a complacent, uninformed citizenry. This is our real danger today. Yes, the truth must be told even at the risk of destroying, in large measure, the influence of men who are widely respected and loved by the American people. The stakes are high. Freedom and survival is the issue.” (The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p. 582.)

Let's see, Cruz' dad was a 'Seven Mountain Dominionist' 'Christian', yet Ted now attends and SBC church, and has since at least December 2012. In a December 2012 editorial in the Dallas Morning News, the editorialist quotes Cruz, in the eighth paragraph of the editorial, as saying, "I’m Cuban, Irish and Italian, and yet somehow I ended up Southern Baptist." I have yet to see a retraction of this.

IF 'faith in the God of the Bible' is such a concern of yours, perhaps Mr. Trump's comments at the July 18, 2015 Family Leadership Conference in Ames, Iowa, may be of interest. Mr. Trump stated, "I'm not sure I have ever asked God's forgiveness. I don't bring God into that picture."

He further stated, "When I go to church and when I drink my little wine and have my little cracker, I guess that is a form of forgiveness. I do that as often as I can because I feel cleansed. I say let's go on and let's make it right." In clarification, he further stated that, " I go to communion and that's asking forgiveness, you know, it's a form of asking forgiveness."

I appreciate Mr. Trump's honesty in admitting that he cannot remember asking God's forgiveness for anything however, he is woefully mistaken about the meaning of 'communion', 'The Lord's Supper', 'The Eucharist', or however you might refer to this remembrance of Christ's sacrifice at Calvary. His pride, at not having to ask the Lord's forgiveness, is a whole other thing, of which I'll not comment on.

In 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Paul explains this sacrament of faith. It is NOT about seeking forgiveness! In verses 27-29, Paul ADMONISHES the Corinthian church NOT to partake of communion in an 'unworthy' manner, meaning partaking of the Lord's Supper though NOT first seeking the Lord's forgiveness, or NOT first forgiving anyone else we have feelings against. 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 reads, 'So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.'. In verses 30 and 31, he also stated that some are ill and some have even died because that have taken communion in an unworthy manner.

Given that Mr. Trump attends Norman Vincent Peale's church, and was a big fan of Mr. Peale, the 'Joel Osteen' of an earlier era, it is no wonder that Mr. Trump is so badly mistaken about a basic sacrament of the Christian faith. He is not alone! Too many in 'Christendom' have had their 'ears tickled' by the Word Faith false preachers who preach tha you CAN worship both Mammon and God!

As I am a Canadian, I am blessed to NOT have to make the choice between Mssrs. Trump, Cruz or Kasich. (Of course, Komrades Bernie and Hillary would be definitely out of the question.). Instead, unfortunately, I am stuck for another four years, with a 'leader' who is merely a paler, younger version of your current _resident.

Unfortunately, I believe that we are in a period of 'chastisement', that we get the politicians we deserve. No matter what, no matter who is in charge, 1 Timothy 2:1-4 instructs us to pray for our leaders, as God remains in charge! I have little faith that the US, or ANY country in what was once called 'Christendom', is prepared to turn back to God. Instead, we (Christendom) are putting our hopes in men (and women), a sure fire disaster is bound to happen. In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God gives a CONDITIONAL promise. (If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.) The history of the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah in the Tanakh should be a byword for 'Christendom', but it is not. Unfortunately, 'Christendom' has forgotten. Wealthy society is generally more interested in the 'material' than the 'spiritual'.

Maranatha, Lord, maranatha!

Trump makes up his own rules to benefit himself as he goes along. Look at his threats to take FOX journalists to court for “defaming his character” and compare that with his constant rants about “lyin Ted” which he continues in this interview.

Romney has been connected with “New Apostolic Reformation” (NAR), besides LDS. Both are off-the-wall whacky.

Planning on a forum riot are you?

Truth is that voters ARE angry and conservative voters are the most angry.
Anger is proper and widely shared but it can also be self-destructive and have lasting unforeseen consequences.

Truth is that Trump's background does not include anything like diplomacy and his thin skin does not allow for adult debate. Emotionally, he is still hanging out on the playground going "neener - neener" and insisting that the other guy is the bully (or dumb, or a liar, or short, or depraved, or...just not rich).

That kind of bombast surely could attract those looking for a strongman and a plan, no matter how lame it may be. It's a shame that otherwise intelligent people (Freepers) refuse to recognize their own desire to find a Great man on a white horse to save the day and provide their revenge.

Hesitate to go here but that desire is what created Napoleon, Cromwell, Robespierre, Hitler, and our first halfrican president.

“But Trump’s hate is not righteous. It’s petty and all about Trump.”

Quite dismissive about his motives....regardless, I’m concerned more about his policies than his motives. Moreover, none of the Republicans warrant my vote with the remote exception of Cruz. Still....he’s a pretty distant 2nd.

“He hates his opponents, even the Pope.”

I’ve been (past tense) a devout Catholic for over a decade and I can honestly say that this Pope and the present Magisterium are little better than apostates. It’s really been despressing...seeing what they have done to a Church already suffering from modernism, heresy, and Schism. Trump can say whatever he wants about the Pope and it can’t be too harsh.

“He hates newswomen who don’t know their place.”

Are you for real? Taking up for poor helpless journalists? *sniff* Has any political figure in our lifetime received as much negative press as Trump? He’s a big boy and can take it. The same goes for the media. The fact that you’re taking up for anyone in media makes me seriously doubt your cognitive abilities.
