Republican Leaders Map a Strategy to Derail Donald Trump (Coburn or Perry 3rd party candidate)
New York Times ^ | March 19, 2016 | ALEXANDER BURNS and JONATHAN MARTIN

Republican leaders adamantly opposed to Donald J. Trump’s candidacy are preparing a 100-day campaign to deny him the presidential nomination, starting with an aggressive battle in Wisconsin’s April 5 primary and extending into the summer, with a delegate-by-delegate lobbying effort that would cast Mr. Trump as a calamitous choice for the general election.

Recognizing that Mr. Trump has seized a formidable advantage in the race, they say that an effort to block him would rely on an array of desperation measures, the political equivalent of guerrilla fighting.

There is no longer room for error or delay, the anti-Trump forces say, and without a flawlessly executed plan of attack, he could well become unstoppable.

But should that effort falter, leading conservatives are prepared to field an independent candidate in the general election, to defend Republican principles and offer traditional conservatives an alternative to Mr. Trump’s hard-edged populism. They described their plans in interviews after Mr. Trump’s victories last Tuesday in Florida and three other states.

The names of a few well-known conservatives have been offered up in recent days as potential third-party standard-bearers, and William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, has circulated a memo to a small number of conservative allies detailing the process by which an independent candidate could get on general-election ballots across the country.

Among the recruits under discussion are Tom Coburn, a former Oklahoma senator who has told associates that he would be open to running, and Rick Perry, the former Texas governor who was suggested as a possible third-party candidate at a meeting of conservative activists on Thursday in Washington.

Mr. Coburn, who left the Senate early last year to receive treatment for cancer, said in an interview that Mr. Trump “needs to be stopped”

“an independent candidate in the general election, to defend Republican principles” ... you mean an establishment candidate to lie to us again by promising to follow Republican (conservative) principles and then doing exactly the opposite ... that kind of republican principes?

Don’t these guys get it. Trump exists precisely because these republicans failed to defend, let alone, follow republican (conservative) principles!

Huh, never looked at the handle that way.

Based a lot of his posts, I think you’re right.

Trump’s ignorance about Planned Parenthood is an example of how little he cares about pro-life.

He is woefully ignorant of PP. Most pro-life people are extremely aware of what PP does, including selling baby parts.

Trump saying ‘they do good for the health of poor people’ displayed appalling ignorance of PP.

If PP continues to be supported, they will continue to do abortions... it’s their bread and butter.

Trump is not passionate about pro-life. How can he be when he was totally pro-abortion only a few years ago. Even favored partial birth abortion.

He is doing lip service to pro-life now and that’s all that it is.

Another person here had a better idea - just vote for Trump at the top of the ticket, and NO ONE ELSE (or even vote Democrat) below his name.

Once the INCUMBENTS in Congress start seeing that threat, Cockburn and Perry will be DISPATCHED in 5 minutes. It’s one thing for them to let Hillary have the top job, it is QUITE ANOTHER to be kicked out of their own jobs.

Trump needs to SEND THAT THREAT OUT IMMEDIATELY - to end this Third Party crap, once and for all.

All of trump’s policies are conservative.
which means nothing. he unsays today everything he said yesterday, and then says more stuff that he will unsay tomorrow. that's sort of a problem with a guy that could be president.

///There is nothing delusional in opposing Trump.///

There is if you still think Cruz can get to 1237.

///You can give me no good reasons to support him except that he’s made a lot of wild promises that you believe.///

The paramount issue for me is illegal aliens. Trump will do more for us than Hillary on this.

///There is nothing in his history that proves he will do what he says. He has changed positions so many times it hurts.///

You don’t know what it’s like to do business in NY. He is reasonably consistent on illegals and that is my main issue.

///All you trumpers can do now is swarm and insult Cruz supporters.///

Look through all my posts on FR and try to find one where I insulted Cruz. I even voted for him here in VA where he came in 3rd.

///You can give nothing positive.///

Trump is better than Hillary

///Let me post something here etc, etc///

Did he go to jail?

To: GOPe Means Bend Over Spell Run

If Trump does win the nomination, look for the establishment types to jump ship and finally reveal their true selves -- and join the Democrats. They have been playing Dem-lite for years.

Actually, that would be the best thing that happens to the Republican party -- getting rid of the crud.

Yeah, that’ll work. Coburn who nobody outside his state has heard of and Perry who’s tried twice before and made it, what, a whole six weeks each time? Yep, Trump’s worried now. They’re showing they can be just as feckless in this endeavor as they are in Congress.

No.

#NeverTrumpers really want to elect Hillary Clinton President.

None of their proposed candidates can get elected.

TDS has made them lose sight of what is at stake.

Its either Trump or Cankles.

Any one who sells your their snake oil is simply dishonest.

And you think denigrating Trump supporters is going to draw them to your side? Right now Trump is getting about a million more total votes than Cruz. Without them, even if Cruz did manage to finagle the election, he will need more voters than he has now. Otherwise it will be Romney II and the excuses: he could have won but a few million voters stayed home.

Yup. They’re beyond stupid.

Why they don’t come out and say vote for Hillary?

How in the world does that advance conservatism?

They don’t say how we can live with four more years of liberal rule.

What they’re doing is pretending you can stop Trump and have a President more to the GOP establishment’s liking.

Perhaps in an alternative universe.

They want to run a third party conservative? What’s he going to say? He’s against big government? We need to do something about the debt? We need immigration reform? There are three federal agencies that need to be done with but they can only remember two of them?

Trump is saying all of this except that last one.

I am not a Trump supporter, but if he wins the nomination, I will support him 100%. The GOPe extracted a promise from him to support the eventual nominee and he deserves nothing less. Otherwise you’re voting for Hillary and a liberal SCOTUS and the demise of our Republic.

Some of them are just trolls at this point.

They know Cruz cannot win the nomination, so they are openly siding with the Gope, while still harboring delusional dreams that he will magically become the nominee over the guy that got the most votes.

Their heads have been filled with so much woo from Beck and Cruz sycophants of heavenly and divine intervention coming to save them....because prophesy, or something, that they just confidently make fools of themselves on a daily basis.

So, your hatred of Trump is so strong that you endorse ANY and ALL means to deny him the nomination even if success in stealing the nomination through smokey backroom deals and handing it to some Johnny-come-lately or even some Johnny-come-lastly will be a Pyrrhic victory resulting in the permanent destruction of the GOP, the election of Hillary Clinton, and the subsequent, permanent destruction of what’s left of the U.S. Constitution?
