North Korea's supreme court sentenced American student Otto Warmbier to 15 years of hard labor for crimes against the state, China's Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.
Warmbier, a University of Virginia student, was detained by the North in January for trying to steal an item bearing a propaganda slogan from his hotel in Pyongyang and had confessed to crimes against the state, North Korean media said previously.

15 years for stealing an ashtray?
What kind of idiot takes a tour to NK?
Why would anyone go to North Korea
Why would any American travel there? And where were the parents? Sending your kid to North Korea? What could possibly go wrong?
I’m still wondering why anybody would ever venture into NK ... knowing that your chances of getting out are less than 50/50. Fools one and all.
I’ve seen pictures of some really hot female North Korean soldiers.
But, yeah, not worth the prison time. :)
That’s tough, but fair. /s
What are the odds Trump negotiates his release. And the ashtray?
That’s what I say.
You might not even MAKE it to prison, by the time those gals stopped Tae Kwan Do- ing you!!! ;)
Dollars to doughnuts he is a liberal snowflake
See, I wonder if this guy was fooled by a Melissa Click-type into thinking the US was so oppressive, and took his freedoms for granted.
Not only that, but to steal something from the hotel is just as stupid. They probably have spies and hidden cameras everywhere. NK isn’t a place I’d ever want to visit.
Did you hear that they denied her appeal to get her job back?
She’s out for good now. $58K/year and was to be tenured next year.
HA ha!!!
what was he doing there anyways?
Left winger?
In myyyyy safe spaceee!
As a responsible parent, I made sure to explain to my daughter that if you are a five day visit to North Korea, do not let ANYONE goad you into stealing a propaganda banner.
I hope that more parents actually speak to their children about such things... Of course, my daughter’s first response was ‘Well, duh’ - she is a bit flippant, I blame her mother. Then asked how long a sentence the guy got.
Well, stupidity should hurt.
