North Korea's supreme court sentenced American student Otto Warmbier to 15 years of hard labor for crimes against the state, China's Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

Warmbier, a University of Virginia student, was detained by the North in January for trying to steal an item bearing a propaganda slogan from his hotel in Pyongyang and had confessed to crimes against the state, North Korean media said previously.

The odds are better than that actually. There are multiple tour groups that run tours to North Korea that take Americans along with other westerners. I don’t have numbers as to how many people visit, but the vast majority are obviously not detained. If half the people who went or less were detained, no one would go.

Tour North Korea? Common sense maybe common knowledge but it is seldom common practice.

I’ve seen pictures of some really hot female North Korean soldiers.

I've got a picture here of a dead American officer killed by a North Korean woman, taken by AP during the war.

“Why would any American travel there? And where were the parents? Sending your kid to North Korea? What could possibly go wrong?”

Those are good questions that were appropriate 30 - 40 years ago.

The amount of influence and/or control a parent has over a teenager on up today ranges from very little to none.

If little junior wants pot, he gets it, if he wants to smoke, that’s OK, if he wants to be a homo, that’s good too. It all started in the 90’s when schools, social services and the government put more pressure on parents to improve kids self esteem. The result was a bunch of narcissistic idiots that do as they please and respect no one. They are the obama voters.

And North Korea? They never been told anything bad about the place.

I say let the jerk rot in the NK prison.

Personally, I prefer the hot Russian soldiers. Some of those girls are just outright beautiful. They can take me prisoner and force themselves on, and I’d just take the punishment.

I think there should be a law or a declarative statement written into a law saying “We advise you not to go there, but if you still do you’re on your own”.

Right now it is idiots going there and millions spent to save them.

“...What kind of idiot takes a tour to NK?...”

Probably the same kind of idiot who would vote for a guy who honeymooned in the Soviet Union and then became a senator from Vermont...

If you can believe the article, this “student” acted stupidly. But, never put it past the NorKa to frame a foreigner for a manufactured crime against the state. What in the world was he thinking to go to North Korea in the first place? North Korea should be avoided like the plague.

In my day our unit in Korea (52 or 53) came under artillery fire and the South Koreans (ROK)had a patrol looking for the enemy forward observer. They found an elderly South Korean woman adjusting the fire - and doing a good job. It was said she was threatened with the death of her family if she didn’t. She was executed.

They certainly won’t be doing it now.

Just fly to Seoul and walk around Gangnam after dark. Way better scenery than any NK military parade. :)
