As the Whigs declined, there really were three viable parties. Ah, the good old days.

Everyone, calm down. What if Ted Cruz had essentially the same number of delegates at the convention? In that situation, does Trump still have to get the nomination “or else?”

This is not a question intended to goad anyone. The scenario is a bit unlikely. But, inquiring minds want to know and would be interested in the rationale for answers.

I Stand With Ted (and will work for Trump if he is the candidate)

I say let the RNC/GOPe do what they will, and let the chips fall where they may.

Everything needs to be dismantled and rebuilt anyway. May as well get on with it.

Rush is right -- there would be a rebellion, but so what? There are rules for how many votes you need to win the nomination, and if Trump doesn't have them, he have no "right" to be nominated.

The votes of the people who affirmatively don't like the guy are no less valid than the votes of those who do.

I can’t stand with Cruz as long as he is involved with Glenn Beck. Beck is disturbing, really disturbing. We lose with Cruz if Beck is involved.

If a brokered convention actually happens, IMO it will be the end of the GOP and should be very quick creation of a real 3rd party. I truly think that the time if ripe to form a legit 3rd party.

This always puzzles me. If those who support Trump aren't even a majority of those who vote Republican, then how in the world are they going to get enough votes to win anything? Even the remnants of the GOP would have more support than the new Trump party.

I want to make sure that everyone is one the same page here....

If we go into the convention with Trump having 1100 delegates, Cruz having 800 delegates, Rubio having 300 delegates and the others having 200 delegates...How would it be considered “cheating” or “stealing” to give it to someone other than Trump? The rules were setup well in advance that if nobody reaches 1236 it goes to an open convention. Certainly, Trump’s primary success should be considered by the delegates when choosing their nominee but so too should his behavior on the campaign trail and everything else that goes with it.

As far as I know, the nomination process has NEVER been setup in a way that simply having a plurality of the delegates guarantees a candidate the nomination.

Are you Trump supporters suggesting that we change the rules at the last minute to prevent delegates from voting for anyone other than the candidate with the most delegates?

You people sound like the liberals who want to get rid of the Electoral College because sometimes election results don’t go the way they want.

Looking at this from the outside, I would say the third party has already been created. There’s the Democrats, the Republicans, and We The People.

Just out of curiosity, aren't those who vote Democrat or Republican just as much part of "the People" as are you?

It might be a Brokeback Convention, but Rubio will have having a Foam Party to celebrate with Lindsey Graham and the Log Cabin Republicans.

Let’s think about a brokered convention for a second. The only way they can take it away from Trump is if they enlist Cruz. With more than 70% of the votes coming from Anti-establishment sources, Trump and Cruz own the nomination.

The GOPe already burned that bridge with Cruz. He has a better chance throwing in with Trump and getting a seat on SCOTUS, then to throw in with the GOPe and take Trump down. What the GOPe fail to realize is, with either Trump or Cruz gone, the other will get his votes. None of Trump or Cruz’s votes will go to Kasich or Rubio.

So for all intent and purpose, Kacish and Rubio maxed out.

They are part of the generic “we the people”, but this uprising against Dems and Repubs could be a whole new party. Call it whatever. No, I’m not part of “we the people” - being Canadian and all.

Gee, does Cruz stand with Beck or the other way around? A candidate can’t go around disavowing every goof-ball that likes him all the time. Trump, Cruz, Hillary and even Obama can’t do that. Although, going to a KKK rally (Trump never came close, BTW)or Chicago’s Trinity so-called “church” are roughly equivalent.

My nuclear option is ‘excoriation hearings’ launched by state legislators. They could either neuter or destroy the Ruling Class with SUBJECTIVE decisions unconstrained by legal tradition depending on the public mood. Similar to Athenian ostracism but without the pitfalls of actual ostracism.

Then on the next off-year election and every election after that, primary out and/or defeat any congress critter opposed to excoriation.

. I don't understand that. I have no idea exactly how delegates would vote on second and succeeding ballots. But why would Cruz throw in with Trump if he's got a chance to win at the convention?

In any case, I think Trump will win the nomination even on a second+ ballot. I just don't understand the logic of those who think it will be "theft" if he doesn't. It takes a majority of votes to win, not just a plurality, and those were the rules long before this race started.

Quite a few. Prior to Reagan, the GOP was still considered the party of the affluent (Rockefeller Republicans).

“Reagan Democrats” was a term used to describe essentially white voters who didn’t have a college education.

Today, that’s a large chunk of the party’s base...and it’s at war with the Rockefeller Republicans running the party.

You see that in Texas today. By the end of the 1980s, all of Democrat politicians who wanted to keep their seats switched to the Republican Party (including Rick Perry) because the “Reagan Democrats” were now Republican voters.

I am a Cruz guy but if Donald wins by even 1 delegate he should get the nod. Cruz has stated as much as well.

One of the Cruz Super PACs is funded by a Glenn Beck fan. That means Cruz has to at least tolerate Beck’s craziness. Faustian bargain...but that’s politics.

Name somebody else who ANYBODY has voted for this year.

Sure, “it’s legal” for the Party insiders to name their chosen candidate from their chosen few insiders. Now, other than those 1260 Republican Party insiders who would vote in Cleveland, how many others nationally would vote for a designated Republican appointee?

You think ANYBODY would cross over and vote for a Republican appointed candidate?
