Donald Trump on Thursday night said he's changing his stance on visas for highly skilled immigrant workers.
"I’m changing it, and I’m softening the position because we need to have talented people in this country," Trump said at the Fox News GOP debate in Michigan.
Trump's comments came after debate moderator Megyn Kelly raised the issue. Kelly noted that Trump had previously opposed those visas, saying they "decimate American workers," but appeared to change his position at an earlier CNBC debate. Trump said recipients of the visas go to high-profile U.S. universities and "desperately" want to remain in the country. He said they should be allowed to stay and work in places that need high-skilled workers, such as Silicon Valley.
"We need highly-skilled people in this country," Trump said. "For that purpose, we absolutely have to be able to keep the brainpower in this country."
Trump is doing this for patriotic reasons. He doesn't need the money. I would not be surprised if he just say f it. If I can read body language it appears to me he really doesn't want the job which is why I like him.
H-1B = corporate welfare. Who do you think is pushing for it thru agents on K St.?
Oh, please, not even close. The media is in the tank for him. If he can't handle that, there is no way he can defend the country from ISIS. Trump's whole brand is being undefeatable. You don' accidentally slip and, 'I've decided to change...' Especially since none of his critics have been pounding on him about that particular issue. If he wins the nomination, you can expect him to be more honest about a lot of his positions.
Well, I would contest that, but more importantly he is driven by deep insecurity and needs attention constantly.
You know, we have to be careful about American business ethics in the new economy with new technologies.
If a company truly needs a worker for good reasons, not for the fact that they can pay a foreigner less they should be allowed to hire. That is not the case with Disney, nor is it the case with the big tech companies.
Loyalty to one’s employees, to the common good and to one;s country is still an ethic that should prevail imho. Capital has rights, but Capital has duties. We need to revisit this issue.

He is talking about attracting and keeping the individuals of exceptional talent and value here. That's how USA beat Germans and Russians in creating first nuclear weapon, then later Russians in the space race.
Solid state physics of semiconductors and computer architecture developed in 1940s-50s by the same generation of European refugee scientists and engineers (von Neumann, Behe, Wigner, etc; mostly from Hungary, Poland and Germany) was the basis for computer revolution that followed from 1970s. Or electric power and radio technological revolutions which started from the beginning of 20th century were creations of another refugee, Nicola Tesla from Balkans.
It's good for all of us if the best and the brightest from the whole world end up here.
The creativity of each such individual ends up generating far more jobs than that one position such person would "steal" from one American (who may not exist in the first place). Keeping them away is penny wise and pound foolish.
H-1B is wage lowering scheme.

Immigration is a hot button issue, Trump got the message, and he clarified it. Meanwhile, Obama is granting amnesty to chunks of people and no one notices.

It’s a rough situation and I don’t know the answer unless these CEOs man up and act together and develop a love of the USA and their fellow man.
The issue is, either way, regardless of what anyone does - if a company wants cheaper labor and can’t bring it onshore, they will offshore or even move parts of the company overseas.
I know a lot of it is too much detail for me to truly understand. I trust Sessions so am going with that.

That's exactly what his site says he wants to end. What he is supporting is the real "best and brightest" immigration, not the corrupt form prevailing now.

There is not a shortage though. This fact should be self evident in wages. If there was a shortage STEM jobs where most of the H1Bs are issues we would see wages in STEM moving strongly upward. What we actually see is wages are stagnant or even declining in some places. This is basic economics telling us there are no shortages except in the number of companies willing to pay American scientists and engineers what they are worth.
Certainly not ideal.

The analogy and that type of insult has been around for a long time.
And here’s the truth, I am not “anti-Trump.”
I am, however, anti-any jackass who insults me to make their point. When that happens, I insult back.
What I can’t believe is how hateful the Trump supporters have become.
Those companies will get their money from the government, that is, from the taxpayers, one way or another.
So we will be paying for this wave of immigration that is destroying the American middle class and turning America into a third-world country.
Don’t think for a minute the Corporatists are going to do anything that impacts their profits.
I agree that there are loopholes to be filled. For example, the families cannot become eligible for SS and welfare benefits.
I do not see the companies getting the taxpayers to pay for the new employee directly and my comment was to point out that they cannot be allowed to pay a below market rate for these people.
What we want is for the system to benefit the citizens of this country and this means that our citizens need to be hired with a level playing field. I have no desire to let a good candidate from another country go back after getting his/her education here if there is a job for them, but I do not want to stack the system against the US citizen’s application for the same job.
