Trump: I'm 'Changing' My Position on Immigrant Visas
The Hill ^ | 3/3

Posted on 03/03/2016 7:16:20 PM PST by nickcarraway

Donald Trump on Thursday night said he's changing his stance on visas for highly skilled immigrant workers.

"I’m changing it, and I’m softening the position because we need to have talented people in this country," Trump said at the Fox News GOP debate in Michigan.

Trump's comments came after debate moderator Megyn Kelly raised the issue. Kelly noted that Trump had previously opposed those visas, saying they "decimate American workers," but appeared to change his position at an earlier CNBC debate. Trump said recipients of the visas go to high-profile U.S. universities and "desperately" want to remain in the country. He said they should be allowed to stay and work in places that need high-skilled workers, such as Silicon Valley.

"We need highly-skilled people in this country," Trump said. "For that purpose, we absolutely have to be able to keep the brainpower in this country."

Really? Is there data to back that up ? I always thought people were disgusted like I was and it was a protest non vote.

It’s not something I would do again to be honest. How can I B*tch about the state of affairs if I don’t even bother to vote. And morally, I was a little bit responsible for Obama .. Hillary is a bad person IMO and I cannot contribute to her as POTUS.

I can’t stand Romney b/c he was the governor here in MA where I am .. thanks for Romneycare. But in all honesty, I do view the Mormons as very nice, but very odd and very much a cult. It’s like the Hotel California ... you can check out any time you like , but you can never leave. SO I always wondered about his judgement. Unfair of me I know, but I am being honest.

Trump has said this all along. Not talking about bringing in with H1b visas to replace American workers, talking about foreign students who graduate and have to go back, can’t stay. He has said this from day 1, I’ve heard him.

I've been pointing this out for months, and Trump supporters have been saying that it's a lie.

Now Trump says it on the big stage.

Exactly. My family doctor is a young. Syrian woman. I switched to her from a white, middle-aged guy a lot like myself because she’s a better doctor.
And she’s completely legal, like Trump’s workers, unlike Rubio’s.
Having said that, thank you medical science for blood panel prostate exams.
Welcome to the 21st century Cruzerubots!

Go Trump

With billionaire Trump running for president, I am starting to learn how wealthy people think as I listen to him during debates etc..

Truth is, they are flexible. I don't mean this as a GOOD or BAD thing, just different as how a gettinolder blue collar thinks.

Case in point (not trump, somebody else); a wealthy individual bought an abandoned coastal town not far from where I live, with the intent of turning it into an Utopian elitist community full of scientists and artists with the goal of "solving the worlds problems", I don't know what changed his mind but he gave that up and is now striving to take the same town site and turn it into a large seaport on the west coast exporting LNG to Asia.

Again, I am not criticizing Trump's change of positions, just noting how they (mega-rich/succesful) think outside the box.

I hope that Mr. Trumps position changes will continue to align themselves with how we, those who are disenchanted with the status quo and state of the union, feel. Especially as it appears he will be the party's nominee.

And his key point was to require pay for the visa types that matches the citizen’s pay. This effectively stops a company from hiring a visa worker to cut compensation.

So Trump is still OK on this issue.

Trump said he was softening that policy.

I don’t know what that means.

But it’s not H1b visas to take American jobs. Trump doesn’t have open border donors like Cruz and Rubio so he won’t want a 500% increase to replace American workers.

You are so right. That is why I cannot get over so many Freepers who are well learned and good reasoning falling for his lines. He made it clear tonight that he is a up again down again guy and we will NEVER see a mass deportation of illegals here. He says he will send them all home? HA... not on your life. He jumped into that pile of manure tonight....leave the good ones here. HE is going to pick and choose?

Dictator Donald!!!!

I don't think he was talking about students tonight. He never mentioned that. I think he was talking in general.

Personally, I think it was just his first step backing away from his pronounced views on immigration/trade/protectionism. I don't believe he ever really believed in those positions, it was just a tactic.

I don’t think most people see the distinction in H1B unless you study it or are in a field where you see it firsthand.

The thing he did tonight was to say he was ‘softening’ his stance on H1B but I don’t know why he said that since what he went on to say is what he has always said.

Confusing to be sure, I wish he was more articulate sometimes but on the other hand, I do love that he isn’t scripted. This is one format though, where it can work against him.

Yes we need talented people ( not just the anti- American jihadists O is bringing in here now). But we have a hundred million unemployed American adult working- age citizens — the greatest mass of people out of work ever. And many very highly qualified people among them. Admitting more foreigner workers to take jobs now is a terrible slap in the face of American wanna-be- workers. This is certainly not a good time to be giving our Lamont - nonexistent jobs away to more and more and more foreigners. Just saying

Trump is talking about highly skilled workers where there is a shortage. Cruz and Rubio will let all the illegals in. Hey, that’s how they got in, so I can’t blame them.

Do you do warm-up stretches before you start your daily contortions? So are you saying Trump doesn't want the low-skilled H1-B visa workers (doing jobs Americans won't do)...he only wants H1-B visas for the high-skilled, high-paying jobs that Americans won't do? Or do Americans want those jobs? I'm confused by the constant twists and turns from this guy.

Well, I’ve been forced to back Trump. Face it, he’s the nominee. There’s no use fighting it unless you want to lose to Hillary. Hillary will end this country. All she has to do is start where Obama left off. Trump is at least persuadable and he’s serious about the border. The illegal population is probably at least a tenth of the U.S. population, over 30 million, the many of whom get food stamps and Medicaid through their U.S. born children. Will Trump reap financial benefits through the Presidency? I think he will. Is there anyone else to take care of business, that will not be cowed by political correctness? No. Will sometimes act like a liberal. Yes. But I’ll take my chances that his interests will align with mine at least some of the time. I think he will make the economy grow and invest in the military. And electing him doesn’t violate the Constitution. It’s enough for me right now.

Oops, you're right. Still a nut job though.

As for the Ninth Circuit, they are like the Supreme Court and are not a JUST court.

They are just another political body.

I HOPE FREEPERS were listening to him closely tonight.. you could see and hear the beginnings of the regression. NO way in a life time that a President can pick and choose who goes back home or who stays in this country other than forming a..................
