Trump: I'm 'Changing' My Position on Immigrant Visas
The Hill ^ | 3/3

Posted on 03/03/2016 7:16:20 PM PST by nickcarraway

Donald Trump on Thursday night said he's changing his stance on visas for highly skilled immigrant workers.

"I’m changing it, and I’m softening the position because we need to have talented people in this country," Trump said at the Fox News GOP debate in Michigan.

Trump's comments came after debate moderator Megyn Kelly raised the issue. Kelly noted that Trump had previously opposed those visas, saying they "decimate American workers," but appeared to change his position at an earlier CNBC debate. Trump said recipients of the visas go to high-profile U.S. universities and "desperately" want to remain in the country. He said they should be allowed to stay and work in places that need high-skilled workers, such as Silicon Valley.

"We need highly-skilled people in this country," Trump said. "For that purpose, we absolutely have to be able to keep the brainpower in this country."

I think it's quite clear he's talking about H-1Bs. He is talking about highly skilled workers and Silicon Valley. His properties are not in Silicon Valley, that's where H-1B engineers are.

Please, tell me what Trump resorts in Silicon Valley? Since you are claiming he does.

If something goes wrong while you are bombing the hell out of ISIS, don't worry. President Trump understands that if you eject you changed sides.

How did Cruz or Rubio force Trump to say this?

No one can because he really didn’t change his position if you pay attention to him BUT he was asked ‘are you changing your position on immigration’ and he responded ‘yes, I am softening it a little’ (or something like that)

It’s him! He is horrible in this type of format. IE not a skilled politician :)

Trump was not talking about H1B visas.

During the live thread of the Phoenix rally shortly after Trump started his campaign we were watching his rally online and most of us who were paying attention quickly saw what was coming when Trump started blasting conservatives and what we stand for that this was not a guy who was going to adhere to conservative principles - when you attack conservatives from the beginning, that’s a pretty good sign of what is to come. The words came straight out of his mouth. We don’t need to hear anything Cruz, Rubio, or anyone else says to know what Trump is about. He’s made it very clear to anyone who pays attention and doesn’t just swoon over the fluff.

I have highly skilled employees that are here legally providing value to my company and our customers. They are outstanding individuals, all of them. They followed the entire visa process to the letter of the law and some will become citizens. THIS is exactly what has made America the best country on the planet, attracting the very best. Legal immigration is our DNA.

Quick question. If Trump drops out and endorses Hillary, Jeb, etc. Will you vote for whoever he endorses?

It’s got to be better than Cruz’s 500% increase

It's not.

200K foreign students graduate every year.

“If there are two sides to every issue trump is on three of them.”

I’m stealing that one and probably using it without attribution! Fabulous, concise, and excruciatingly accurate. Many thanks.

“Trump is WRONG. We have enough brains and talent and foreign students should go home and build up their own country. Shame on Trump.”

What they say “we need more skilled workers, we just don’t have enough”

What they mean “we don’t want to pay competitive wages for American tech workers.”
