McConnell claims GOP will sacrifice White House, drop Trump ‘like a hot rock’ if he’s nominee

Republican voters need only look to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to understand that GOP lawmakers will willingly sacrifice the White House in order to save their own hides.

As the Republican Party begins to accept the very real possibility that front-runner Donald Trump will be their presidential nominee, McConnell “laid out a plan that would have lawmakers break with Mr. Trump explicitly in a general election,” The New York Times reported.

Despite his overwhelming victories thus far, leaders of the party think Trump will lose in the general election and will hurt Republicans down-ticket.

According to The Times, resistance to Trump “runs deep,” and a “desperate” behind-the-scenes “mission to save the party” from the real estate tycoon stalled out. As a result, “two campaigns have drafted plans to overtake Mr. Trump in a brokered convention.”

The newspaper said the effort to “unite warring candidates behind one failed spectacularly.”

An overture from Senator Marco Rubio to Mr. Christie angered and insulted the governor. An unsubtle appeal from Mitt Romney to John Kasich, about the party’s need to consolidate behind one rival to Mr. Trump, fell on deaf ears.

Kasich in particular has drawn the ire of GOP power brokers, having struggled to compete in the first four states to vote.

“He’s just flailing his arms around and having a wonderful time going around the country, and it just drives me up the wall,” a senior Republican senator said, according to The Times.

Several senator said McConnell was “especially vocal” about how Kasich was being irrational.

If Trump is the nominee, McConnell allegedly has told Senate colleagues, “We’ll drop him like a hot rock.”

And he may treat Trump’s loss in the general as a given, allowing senators to distance themselves from the candidate and run negative ads against him.

While still hopeful that Mr. Rubio might prevail, Mr. McConnell has begun preparing senators for the prospect of a Trump nomination, assuring them that, if it threatened to harm them in the general election, they could run negative ads about Mr. Trump to create space between him and Republican senators seeking re-election. Mr. McConnell has raised the possibility of treating Mr. Trump’s loss as a given and describing a Republican Senate to voters as a necessary check on a President Hillary Clinton, according to senators at the lunches.

All of which suggests that when it comes to political theater, the best is yet to come in the 2016 election. At the very least, it’s going to be an interesting spring and summer.

That means McConnell is willing to give the Supreme Court to liberals for another 40 years to buy himself maybe 10 more years of power. Minority power, but still power.

Why is it impossible for the GOPe to work with Trump, I mean I already heard Trump say that he would be selecting a (e) type for a VP to get things done.... They should capitalize on this not shun it...

I’ve always thought that if Trump is the GOP nominee, the establishment will discreetly back Hillary Clinton. The establishments of both parties are closer to one another than they are to the grassroots movements who they rely on for votes but mostly ignore when in office.

>>There it is. The admission of what we all knew. The Uniparty exists and will stand against any interloper. The GOPe doesn’t need the WH because, as long as it’s occupied by some member of the Uniparty the gravytrain keeps running. The GOPe are perfectly happy to play the Washington Generals as long as the bennies keep flowing.

Trump has exposed them. The truth is now as plain as the nose on your face. Five years ago, this was considered tinfoil hat stuff by most people.

Hillary also tried to shrug off her “acquaintance” (lobbyist) Sid Blumenthal when asked about their communications under oath.

A revolution is always caused by the ruling elite ignoring the people. This is a great example. It’s obvious the gop and the demcrats are all in bed together.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Trump get elected, declare martial law and arrest all the crooks in congress and try them for treason. I’m that sick of them. They hate everyone of us so it’s time we turned on them for real. Vote Trump!

Once again it’s the elites saying “Join us or you’ll help the democrats win”.

Add up Trump and Cruz’s numbers and Rubio gets less that 25%. Add up Trump and Rubio’s numbers and Cruz gets less than 25%. So, don’t give me this crap about 65% of the people not voting for Trump.

So, all of you sore losers can take your ball and go home if you don’t want to vote for Trump in the general. And all of us sore losers will do the same thing if Trump doesn’t win the nomination.

What is your point? Trump won the first couple primaries which means that all the other candidates got less votes than Trump. Do you think we should get someone who got less votes so they could get beaten worse? Should the republicans just give up now? I think you are wrong. I do not think Clinton can beat Trump. Neither Obama nor the Clintons have ever faced a republican who actually fought back.

Most Gop voters cant stand the current Gop. Mcconnell and his ilk are the old. Trump and his voters are the new. McConnell has never represented the voters. Now that someone has come forward who does, he cant stand it. Hey Rino’s take a hike, we’re just getting started.

Of course Mitch would let Trump lose and Hillary win.

It is his charter to make sure the White House stays in the grip of his political party.

If we’re going to post articles like this (that as I type has 234 comments before mine) .. might we not look for more of a quote than “the New York Times reported?”

I would like to hear someone who was in that Republican Senators’ meeting confirm what “the New York Times reported” by name, not as a ‘reliable source,’ of other euphemisms for the reporter’s pulling it out of his/her rear.

This author is right. The Uniparty needs to kill him, one, to remove him as a threat, and two, as a warning to others who would ever attempt such a thing again.

Obama, the multinational corporations and the media need to stop Trump. They recognize this could get out of control. If left unchecked, telling the raw truth and asking questions everyone else is afraid to ask, Trump could wake a sleeping giant. Trump’s election would be a nightmare. Obama has committed many crimes. No one else but Trump would dare to prosecute. He will not hesitate. Once Trump gets in and gets a look at the cooked books and Obama’s records, the game is over. The goose is cooked. Holder could wind up in prison. Jarrett could wind up in prison. Obama bundler Corzine could wind up in prison for losing $1.5 billion of customer money. Clinton could wind up in jail for deleting 32,000 emails or for accepting bribes from foreign governments while Secretary of State, or for misplacing $6 billion as the head of the State Department, or for lying about Benghazi. The entire upper level management of the IRS could wind up in prison.

The MOST important thing every written to date about this entire mess. A huge number of police departments are profiteering on the drug trade. They will NOT go after the dealers until they've run everyone who has touched the filthy stuff through the court system and THEN they MIGHT go after a dealer or two. Profiteering instead of enforcing the law.

I told all of you this a month ago, at least.
