Veteran civil rights leader Dolores Huerta, an avid supporter of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, is accusing Bernie Sanders campaign staffers of preventing her from providing Spanish-language translation to voters who needed it at a Las Vegas caucus location during Saturday's Democratic primary.
Huerta, who co-founded the National Farmworkers Association with late Cesar Chavez in the 1960s, told Univision reporter Fernando Peinado: "I donât feel that Sanders' people respect our community. They stopped the people from having translation [services] in something as important as these caucuses that are taking place. They are showing that they donât respect us."
According to several reports, Huerta offered to help serve as an interpreter at the Harrah's Las Vegas Hotel and Casino caucus site because many caucus-goers were workers who spoke only Spanish.
However, when she got on stage, where the voting was taking place, many in the crowd started yelling "No, no, no!" She told Huffington Post that they were Sanders supporters and were also shouting "English only."
"That is completely against the spirit of everything that we're working for," Huerta said. "To deprive these voters at this crucial time of having a translation of what was going on â this is something they need in order to know what's taking place."
She told ThinkProgress that a Sanders supporter went up on stage as well and she "suggested we both translate." However, the moderator decided no translation would be used.
A video of the event - starting around the 54-min mark - shows the moderator asking if anyone speaks Spanish. When Huerta gets on stage, it's difficult to make out the crowd is yelling -- yet "No, No!" is clearly heard.

You've clearly have the wrong spirit, Huerta.
btw, “Huerta” means “orchard”
“I don’t feel that Sanders’ people respect our community.”
Or, maybe it is the non-English speakers who don’t respect the USA enough to learn the language.
Sander’s team just doesn’t trust the translator.
Build the fence!
I don't respect the French enough to learn theirs. But I'm not working under the table and receiving a supplemental income from the government after sneaking into France, either.
this, in my opinion is the kind of crap that is dividing this country. I for one am sick of it.
Nor are you trying to vote for someone who is pandering to you to keep your native language and not learn the language of the new host country.
Sounds like the Sanders people didn’t trust her to interpret honestly. I don’t blame them.
In order to vote you have to be a US citizen. In order to become a citizen you have to demonstrate a facility in the use of the English language so why are translators needed?
LOL you’re using logic...that’s not permitted in election season...
Unfortunately for you, ***a de ***a, everything American citizens work for is diametrically opposed.
I soon expect a requirement that fluency in Spanish and a real test IN ENGLISH of American history and culture be strict requirements for eligibility for citizenship.
NO EXCEPTIONS!
Chew on that!
If any future voters not yet citizens, ever expect to get citizenship, they best start learning English FAST!
Unless Mexican laws change to provide translators for Americans with no fluency in Spanish who wish to become Mexican citizenship...
What? Americans can't get Mexican citizenship?
Seriously?
The path to citizenship proponents list several requirements. We have heard them recite:
Pay a fine
Pay back taxes
Learn English.
If English is a requirement for illegals, should it not be mandatory for voters?
Maybe, “MIZ” Huerta, they don’t trust what you might be saying...
From the Naturalization pages:
“To become a naturalized U.S. citizen, you must pass the naturalization test. At your naturalization interview, you will be required to answer questions about your application and background. You will also take an English and civics test unless you qualify for an exemption or waiver.”
The exemptions or waivers are for those over 50 with 20 years residence or those over 55.
