Republicans are well positioned to win the 2016 presidential contest for a number of reasons: Our economy is soft, a majority of the public is deeply frustrated by the pace of growth and President Obama's job approval rating is stuck in the mid 40's. This is never good for the incumbent party.
What's more, the leading Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton, is seen as dishonest and untrustworthy by a majority of the general electorate, especially Independents. On it's face, Republicans should win in November.
But, primaries matter. And, right now the GOP field is too crowded to ensure the party puts forward its strongest, most electable candidate. The bottom line is at least a couple candidates need to drop out after the South Carolina primary.
South Carolina has always played a pivotal role in the party's nominating contests and with the exception of 2012, it has always picked the GOP nominee. The polling in South Carolina has been all over the board. But, it looks like Donald Trump will win Saturday's contest with around 1/3 of the vote.
What happens below Trump will be much more interesting and determinative. There are two buckets of candidates: Ted Cruz and Ben Carson, and three mainstream Republicans, Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush and John Kasich....

The gal is an entrepreneur and seemingly favors the top two candidates also favored at FR.
Strategically speaking, it’s best that all the candidates remain in through Florida minimally, and even longer actually. As I’m for Trump, I want no establishment candidate to get a leg up; I want the field to remain messy for a while longer. Gives Trump his best shot at making it through the Primary minefield unscathed. Split up that vote and keep them fighting each other, while Trump then keeps his sizable lead over all of them. They can drop off by natural attrition as the time comes for each of them. Just as long as Trump is the last man standing.
Exactly!
They will disqualify Cruz based on his birth if he is winning. It does not matter if Cruz is elgible or not. The DNC along with GOPe will shop a judge to agree with them. In the meanwhile at the Republicans through a brokered convention will nominate Rubio.
I wish Cruz supporters understood this. Cruz is being used to siphon votes from Trump. If Cruz and Trump could quit attacking each other. Then we can easily defeat the Establishment.
A Trump//Cruz ticket would be unstoppable. In the meanwhile too then Cruz could work on his eligibility through the courts and become POTUS in 2024.
Conservatives would rule for 16 years. However, if Cruz continues on the current path, then he will never be POTUS.

I jump in on Twitter and every other site I have ever signed up on. It isn’t unusual for the veterans to start wildly speculating about you once you get into strong disagreements that your are some old rival. I had quite a few left wingers that would swear I was part of a vast right wing conspiracy by the Koch Brothers to target them. Its always easier to use a red herring than to simply address my arguments.
On Saturday, the chumps can explain how Cruzing past Donald Trump in SC doesn’t matter because he’s ahead in the next state and New Hampshire is a reflection of every other state to come.
That's exactly what Dick Nixon did in 1969. He needed the Goldwater conservatives to get the nomination, so he courted them; but once in office, he gave them "nothingburger" appointments and pushed them aside. Detailed by Ralph Whalen (conservative appointee who quit after six months) in his book, Catch the Falling Flag.
Nixon went on to govern much as Nelson Rockefeller or any of the other "Me-Too" East Coast "good government" Republicans would have done -- as Ike would have done, for instance.
There wasn't much really conservative about Tricky Dick. At least he hated Communists and their Media maggots.
If Trump wins we can look for it being replaced by a socialist big government party
The GOPe needs to keep them in, just in case, because they will grow increasingly desperate to stop Trump. They will try ANYTHING to get voters off Trump. They lose power. So the GOPe is willing to work with any of the other guys (Cruz last I’m sure - he’d be the hardest to corrupt).
Beautiful post. Why can’t I write it so concisely like that? I try but I can’t achieve that simple elegant phrasing. Thanks.
Agreed. Donald Trump reminds me of Richard Nixon because both are extremely progressive on healthcare. I think he would strike up a partnership with Pelosi and the Democrats to make deals...the gutless GOPe would fall in line and conservatives will be right back where we are now. He would gravitate back to liberal positions and how much he is making he is making America “great again.” Its the old Potomac two step.
“A Conservative Thinker” is neither conservative, nor much of a thinker. Only a troll picks a ridiculously obvious screen name like that.
Shills. So tiring.
Hahahahahahaaaa! You think more highly of yourself than I do. I see nothing but another Teddy Bare sycophant, pleading that Teddy Bare is the only true conservative.
Teddy is nothing but a lawyer. Never has been anything more than that. T think that he could be POTUS is as crazy as thinking that Obama would be a great POTUS. They are certainly on the other side of the spectrum, but they are both first-term Senators who placed campaigning before duty.
Teddy was hired as a Senator. He hasn't even done that very well.
You are not a rival. You are just another Teddy Bare! Good luck on Saturday... Donald Trump is the one drawing tens of thousands. Teddy is just filling his ego!
Rubio, Jeb!, Kasich and Carson should get out. Let Trump and Cruz go head to head and lets see who the consensus candidate is.
Yes Rubio and Bush get out
Ya forgot Hispandering ...
How about two Democrat candidates dropping out? I think that would be an improvement.
Not if Cruz isn't eligible.
Let's get the issue settled, once and for all.
“Itâs why Trump and Sanders are lapping the competition in their respective races. They represent the mood of the American people, though theyâre polar opposite solutions to what ails us.”
They are opposite in social tone and which “team” they talk to. Not so much different about whether the government is too big and does way too much stuff.
Now it's in the courts, without Cruz taking ownership of the process. And the questions are up at a very bad time.
I could see Trump/Rubio as the best ticket, Where one has weaknesses, the other has strengths. Rubio has been doing a very fine job regaining his footing after Christie's attack. Cruzers aren't being helpful to the conservative initiative by tearing down Trump and Rubio. What happens if they were to succeed, and then Cruz wasn't eligible?
So much about the Cruz campaign has me shaking my head in disbelief. We were told that Cruz was the smartest guy and best debator in DC. Haven't seen it.
