Francis responded to a reporter's question about Trump's immigration policy being in conflict with the gospel by saying, "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the gospel."
The pope's immigration jab came shortly after he prayed along the southern border for those who died trying to enter the U.S. illegally.
Trump, a Presbyterian, called the comment "disgraceful" and said the pope apparently is not aware of crime linked with illegal immigration.
"If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS ... I can promise you that the pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president because this would not have happened," the billionaire told Fox News.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a Catholic, agreed with Trump.
"I think the Holy Father recognizes, or should recognize (and I believe he does), how generous America is. We accept close to one million [people] every year as permanent residents of the United States. No other country in the world even comes close," Rubio told CNN's Jake Tapper. "There's a balance here between compassionate, but also being responsible, especially in a world where radical jihadists are seeking to use the immigration laws of countries to infiltrate killers and fighters into foreign countries."
The pope's comments even managed to bring former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, also a Catholic, to Trump's defense. Bush told reporters in South Carolina that he supported "walls and fencing where it's appropriate," and did not think it was wise to listen to Francis on "economic or environmental policy," the Associated Press reported.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz opted "not to get in the middle" of any altercation between Francis and Trump.
"That's between Donald and the pope," Cruz told reporters.

"Holy Father?" No. The ONLY HOLY FATHER IS IN HEAVEN.
And here I didn’t realize he was buff before.
I’m seeing Catholics on FB questioning their faith over this pope.
That makes me sad.
This pope has been so political that his comments are way out of bounds for a “religious leader”, especially one NOT from the United States of America. What a disappointment to the Catholic faith...embarrassing for them...
Cruz is such a creep. Hope he goes down to the border with his teddy bears again...
None should question their faith. There have been good popes and bad popes. They are just men. The Church remains.
My mother was not Catholic, but she loved the Pope and Bishop Sheen. I still remember watching midnight Mass at St. Peter’s on the TV every year. She just loved it. So, I did, too.
Anyone - Sean Hannity, in particular - who questions his faith based on a solidly stupid Pope speaking non-ex Cathedra on a subject he is painfully ignorant about - is as stupid as the Pope.
It looks like the pope singled out Trump as the only one being consistent on building the wall.
Yep, you other guys are, if nothing else, wishy washy on the wall and “illegal immigration.”
We all know where Trump stands, and that’s where GOP voters are right now.
I think the pope just gave a big endorsement to Trump.
Trump always said that the wall would have a door.
Attacking Catholics over this is not a good idea.
Trump is an idiot and is Christian only in the sense that he wasn’t born into a Muslim family. He recently discovered that he was a Presbyterian (his Scottish-born mother’s church).
However, the Pope is also an idiot, a leftist engaged in the battles of the 1970s and supported by a cadre of German and Argentinian leftist dinosaurs.
So where do we go from here?
Yes, I won’t say a communist foil, but very close.
“Iâm seeing Catholics on FB questioning their faith over this pope.”
Morons.
Unfortunately, at least half of US Catholics agree with him. So troubling. It was refreshing to hear our priest say a special prayer for Justice Scalia last Suqnday. Gave me a little more hope for my religion.
This Pope is a servant of another Master.
Wait until Ann Barnhardt chimes in.
For the love of God people, Trump was misquoted by a reporter who basically made it sound like he feeds off of the livers of Mexican children, and then the Pope replied a conditional response prefaced on, “If what you say is true, but I give the benefit of the doubt”.
For anyone who actually wants to hear what was said, the transcript is read verbatim starting at 0:57.

Note the reporter misrepresented Trump by saying he wanted to rip families apart. They were looking for a quote for hit pieces to bash Trump, and everyone is falling for it.
The Pope in his statement and in the context of his recent trip to the US-Mexican border was condemning anyone who wants to stop illegal immigration into the United States.
Is the Pope attacking Catholics who disagree with him?
