Detectives question lack of autopsy in Scalia death
New York Post ^ | 02/15/16 | Jamie Schram and Bob Fredericks

Veteran homicide investigators in New York and Washington, DC, on Monday questioned the way local and federal authorities in Texas handled the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

"It's not unreasonable to ask for an autopsy in this case, particularly knowing who he is," retired Brooklyn homicide Detective Patricia Tufo told The Post.

"He's not at home. There are no witnesses to his death, and there was no reported explanation for why a pillow is over his head," Tufo said. "So I think under the circumstances it's not unreasonable to request an autopsy. Despite the fact that he has pre-existing ailments and the fact that he's almost 80 years old, you want to be sure that it's not something other than natural causes."

Bill Ritchie, a retired deputy chief and former head of criminal investigations for the DC police, said he was dumbstruck when he learned that no autopsy would be performed.

"I took a look at the report and I almost fell out of my chair," Ritchie told The Post from his home in Maryland.

"I used to be an instructor in the homicide school. Every death investigation you are handling, you consider it a homicide until the investigation proves otherwise," Ritchie said.

"How do you know that person wasn't smothered? How do you know it's not a homicide until you conduct an investigation? You have to do your job. Once you go through that process, you can conclude that this is a naturally occurring death."

Presidio County Judge Cinderela Guevara said she declared Scalia dead via telephone based on what cops and marshals at the scene told her -- that there were no signs of foul play.

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A vote to block the Obama administration's ambitious climate regulation was one of Antonin Scalia's last acts as a Supreme Court justice. His sudden death may have opened a new path to the rule's survival."

Sorry. It's settled law now.

Down through history, ruthless despots have been guilty of having rivals bumped off more times than we can count. To think this lowbrow SOB we have in the White House is incapable of such a thing given his obvious hatred/contempt for the country, its laws and his opponents is ludicrous. And don’t forget, he’s got thousands of practiced murderers (gangbangers) who support him and would be glad to do it. Of course, there must be an autopsy, even at this late date.

So did my father who is a retired cop here in New York as well who worked some of the worst decades in the 1960s and 1970s. He said the same thing, absolutely unthinkable especially with a high profile guy like Scalia that an autopsy wasn’t done. Some Freepers are saying it’s all nonsense, but may I remind them of the administration we have in place. This is an administration that is funding terrorism via Iran, that has assisted and defended terrorists in the murder of 4 Americans all of which the GOP-E have supported - have they done anything about it? No. They support it. So murder of an 80 year old SCOTUS judge to this administration is peanuts. Already it has been brushed under the rug.

Dieing from natural causes will be the knee jerk cover up to explain a lot of upcoming deaths as the socialist purges continue. How do we know the other justices are not in danger ?

I despise Obama, but IMO, Scalia died, period. The timing sucks...but there’s not much anyone can do about that, short of suicide.

I have several family members that appeared healthy, who received clean bills of health from their MDs and within a week, went to sleep and that was it.

***Actually what I keep focusing on is the fact it would have been so easy to chopper in a ME or even another Dr to actually observe and pronounce the man dead. Ridiculous this day in age to pronounce over the phone even in West TX***

It is ridiculous. Even in Mississippi, as a hospice nurse, myself or a doc has to pronounce death, and you don’t phone it in. You have to physically be there and check for a pulse, breathing, etc. Even if the family tells you they died at say, 4:00 in the afternoon. If I arrive at say, 4:30 I have to make the official pronouncement and time of death would be say, 4:25. Usually the coroner doesn’t come because it’s hospice, unless you suspect foul play, then you call the coroner and police.

And even if a doc had shown up to pronounce, you can’t rule cause of death as being an MI, or aneurysm, etc., unless you have an autopsy. You can’t tell that by looking at the body!

What the hell are judges doing pronouncing death period! And how can you do that based on something a US Marshal sees and tells you over the phone? This is the must ridiculous crap I’ve ever heard of!

Scalia was bald, and much of the body's heat escapes through the scalp.

Although I'm not (quite) bald, I have a thin pillow that I place against the top of my head when it's cold. Puts me right to sleep...

Scalia could easily have done something similar.

Folks should look for other evidence...

Who was with him?

What are their relationships? Work, political, friends, etc?

Who prepared the food and drinks?

How many people interacted that night with him?

Did anyone see anything unusual?

Why wasn't a toxicology report done?

I agree with the Homicide Det's...Considering the times, the importance, the ramifications...There should have been an investigation. Period.

Ironic that it’s the only site on the internet that’s ever banned me, and done so more than once.

Must have been some reasons....

“”I seem to remember the death of another leading American political figure in Texas about fifty years ago””

And there wasn’t any problem or much of a delay to get a local judge to the airport to administer the oath of office to LBJ, was there? No reason for a medical examiner to issue her opinion over the phone instead of getting to the resort...Who knows why it was handled that way. Couldn’t anyone see the controversy it would stir up?

Didn’t he say the pillow was over his head, not his face? Probably meant it was still propped up over his head. If someone questioned him he could clarify.
