Didn’t he say the pillow was over his head, not his face? Probably meant it was still propped up over his head. If someone questioned him he could clarify.

The original quote doesn't even mention a pillow. But there is a picture of the bed attached and the pillows are propped up against the headboard. I do that in the summer because the pillow gets too warm.
But I'll bet you 100 to 1 that he sleeps flat on his back.
