Cape Cod commissioner apologizes for 'happy' Facebook post on Antonin Scalia’s death

A Democratic state Senate candidate and Barnstable County commissioner who posted on social media that she felt “happy” about Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s death has apologized, while the Bay State Republican Party blasted her words as “disgraceful.”

Sheila Lyons, running for a Cape and Islands Senate seat, acknowledged yesterday that as news of Scalia’s death broke Saturday night, she wrote on Facebook: “I know it’s disrespectful to feel happy but Justice Scalia orchestrated tremendous power to benefit the powerful who have controlled the message to the American people.”

Lyons said yesterday, “When you’re going to make a public statement, one must think.

“It was a reminder for me, and it should be for everyone and it’s a reminder that I will now keep,” Lyons said. “Happy was not a good choice of words. Happy implies a state of well-being and euphoria. That’s not what I felt when I read that Justice Scalia died.”

She has since deleted the post and written an apology, which said in part, “It’s always unfortunate when someone dies suddenly ... I am sorry to hear of his passing.” Lyons also called Scalia an “accomplished and brilliant scholar,” but added, “I disagreed with his opinions, his ideology. I’m not saying he’s a bad man. I’m just relieved he’s no longer serving on the bench.”

MassGOP spokesman Terry MacCormack said in a statement, “Commissioner Lyons’ comments that degraded the life and work of a longtime public servant within moments of his death were truly disgraceful. The people of Cape Cod deserve public officials with an even temperament and respect for civil discourse, which Commissioner Lyons clearly seems to lack given this unfortunate episode.”

When asked if her post contributed to the much-decried political incivility in American politics, Lyons said she’s hoping her apology can show she’s civil.

“I’m not afraid to say, ‘Yes, I was wrong,’ ” she said. “I don’t think that’s weak. Hopefully, it will be an example that I’m not going to dig my heels in.”
