"Trump bankrolled politicians to steamroll the little guy, a pattern of sleaze stretching back decades. Worse? Trump still supports eminent domain today."
Who knew such a wonky topic would find its way into political attacks in the Republican presidential race? An ad released this week by Ted Cruz's presidential campaign lodged a renewed attack on Donald Trump's support for eminent domain and alleged use of the government's powers for private gain, to bully an elderly woman out of her home.
There are two problematic aspects of this ad: the misleading headlines that accompany the narration and the cherry-picked footage of Trump's answers that misrepresent the context of his statements. We took a look at these two elements, the context of the ad and the actual sources of the quotes and footage the ad used.
The Facts
The case
In 1994, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, a government agency, attempted to seize an elderly widow's home. The agency tried to invoke "eminent domain," which refers to the government's right to acquire private property for public use.
The house was located near the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. The agency wanted to turn the house and two other properties over to the Trump Organization. Trump had planned to landscape the area and build a new parking lot, with a waiting area for limousines.
The woman, Vera Coking, was in her 70s and had lived in her home for 37 years. She refused to give it up. Then, a four-year court battle ensued.

TRIED AGAIN RECENTLY IN SCOTLAND! Didn’t make news here but the Scot redneck would not be budged and was given an award for his perseverance.

Trump had the homes within view of his “greatest golf course in the world” (lost money last 3 years) blocked with piles of dirt and trees. Now those who have lived there for 40 years cannot see the “preservation” dunes and ocean.

What does he do later? He sues the Scottish government when they want to put up windmills within view from the course because it would take away from the “pleasure” of the view from his course.
“He alleged in the judicial review that his own human rights had been breached, because the windfarm, which is funded by the European commission and supported by many local organisations which had also backed Trump’s golf resort, interfered with his “peaceful enjoyment of his property”.”

I've never been anything but civil with you or anyone else here no matter whom they support.
Think the city brought suit against woman not Trump.
Trump lost in Scotland.

Non issue? Private property is at the heart of all free societies.
Yes, basically what he said. Trump - just another Wall Street insider.
Trump has just been a truth bender all his life.
Uh yeah it IS theft. I don’t care who takes it. Private enterprise or the government. If you can’t build your highway build it somewhere else. Private property is sacred.
LOL. The average voter is going to smell the reek of his insincerity and New York boiler room sales pitch from miles away.
A chicken in every pot.
“Private property is sacred.”
Sorry, but it isn’t! We love our home. Wouldn’t want to have to leave it, but there are some things that are more important to us as a society, so so long as we were properly compensated, I would have no problem with moving. But I will agree with you that the business or condemning private property for private interests is a bad thing. The problem is that local governments are now getting into the business of “redevelopment” and taking property for the benefit of their tax base ( well sort of). Here in CA, Gov. Brown ( whom I hate with a passion) has done away with “an assortment of “redevelopment agencies.” Our town is definitely upscale and has no “blight.” That did not stop the town from setting up a “redeveloment agency” which took over some of the older commercial properties with RA money, then turned it over to private developers to “improve.” At the same time, they took the properties involved off the property tax rolls for a number of years as an “inducement” to the developers. That means that they shifted the tax burden to the rest of us. Thankfully, Brown put that kind of activity out of business. There is simply no reason for government to be in the property business, particularly when they shift costs from those who should shoulder them to the citizens and do it without any votes of those affected.
Well, we will have to agree to disagree. The moment to let your private property become vulnerable to something as sinister as “public good” you are hardly a degree better than Marx.
Hey I wish somebody would offer us $1.2 million for our $125,000 house. Sold all American. LOL!
Thats why yer a winner dinner every election my friend !
You’re right, there’s no moral framework. Also no political philosophy. There’s no way to tell what you’re voting for if you vote for Trump.
“You will, at least till Cruz muffs something, then your perfectionometer will be searching, searching, searching again.”
Cruz is a consistent Constitutional conservative. I have seen him in action on the Senate floor, courtesy of CSpan. Your comment has nothing to do with the reality of who I am, and who Ted Cruz is. And making a mistake does not change the fundamental nature and character of a person. Cruz reminds me of Reagan.
>>Thereâs no way to tell what youâre voting for if you vote for Trump.
Yes, and the thing about “National Populism” is that the collective beast is historically observed to take on a life of its own.
Moral Relativism and Populism are no basis for moral governance - as CS Lewis points out in his essay:
“The poison of Subjectivism”
http://www.google.com/#q=The+poison+of+Subjectivism
While it’s true that we’re voting for a president and not a pope - it’s also true that Cruz’s historical faith, combined with his family’s direct experience with the effects of state-established collective/corporate terrorism (communism) make it more likely that he will operate within the bounds of Christian moral constraint if/when the Collective Nationalist Populist beast does what it always does.
Trump, married 3 times, has no positive history of faithful or family behavior upon which to extrapolate a moral POTUS Trump.
I have another problem with Cruz:
IF he is lying & twisting the truth so badly & so loudly, his staff isn’t calling him out on this. Also- there has to be someone in his campaign staff who is producing these commercials-—which are not cheap.
IF I am working for someone who isn’t using decent ethics, I quit. I have before & I would again.
I wish we had a better candidate than Cruz, but he’s what we’ve got.
His religious positions are, at best, problematic for a political leader.
What I do like is the consistency of Cruz’s positions over time, and the fact that his positions fit into a coherent framework and political philosophy. Neither of these is true of Trump.
