INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 10, 2016) â Carrier plans to relocate its Indianapolis operations to Mexico over the next three years, a move that will affect about 1,400 jobs.
Jobs will begin transitioning to Monterrey, Mexico, in 2017, with completion estimated in 2019. The company manufactures heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems at its plant located on West Morris Street.
...until the phone rings and it’s Donald Trump on the line.
I wonder if they need any construction workers.
Lay this one at the feet of Billy Boy Clinton and that NAFTA nightmare.
I remember when they did this to Syracuse, New York in the late 1990s. Bad deal for the locals.
Willis Carrier is probably rolling over in his grave.
Yeah, they better do it before Jan 21 2017.
I believe in a free market. They should be able to build their air conditioners where ever they want. It’s a business decision.
Just slap a 100% tariff on air conditioning equipment brought in from Mexico.
Just join in the fun and games....or take battalions of security personnel?
Is there some provision in the just passed Trade Agreement, Obamatrade, that is making this happen? Like Ford moving to Mexico?
NAFTA was Reagan’s idea.
Give them some of that 35% import tax on all their products.
Following diplomatic negotiations dating back to 1990 among the three nations, U.S. President George H. W. Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Mexican President Carlos Salinas, each responsible for spearheading and promoting the agreement, ceremonially signed the agreement in their respective capitals on December 17, 1992.[5] The signed agreement then needed to be ratified by each nation's legislative or parliamentary branch.
Yup, that will take us back to the glorious 1950’s, when hardly anyone could afford AC. What’s not to like?
Big business hates Trump. This is an “in your face” move. A shot over the bow.
It should be known that here in Indy, we elected a new Democrat Mayor. His first job is to get a bunch of folks on entitlement programs because another company can't compete with manufacturing in America.
There has been a bunch of whining around here today about the "regulations" part of the explanation. "What regulations?" people are asking. Obamacare, EPA, Energy efficiencies (with operations), taxes, employment, etc. Indiana is a good place for most businesses. But opportunities in Mexico, specifically Monterrey, are rich.
It is worth noting that wages in Mexico are increasing rapidly in manufacturing and construction. In places like Queretaro, Puebla and Monterrey, they aren't that far behind American wages. The business taxes are much friendlier however.
Again, Reagan’s idea. Go after him. He started the negotiations.
Right on Mark!
The media and the democrat establishment have been trying to convince us that everything is going well. Doesn’t work.
