NBC's Jackson, Tur Try, Fail to Get Trump to Say Rubio Hurt in ABC Debate

Catching up with Donald Trump in the "spin room" after Saturday's GOP debate, NBC's Hallie Jackson attempted to get Donald Trump to say who he thought "lost" the GOP debate, hoping, perhaps, to get the New Hampshire frontrunner to attack Sen. Marco Rubio. For his part, Trump refused to take the bait.

"Who do you think, of your rivals, underperformed tonight, Mr. Trump," Jackson asked. "Well, I know who they're all saying underperformed on the Internet, and I know the, your coworkers are all saying... but I don't want to say," Trump replied.

"Besides you, who won the debate tonight," Jackson followed up. Again, Trump demurred. "I just don't want to say.... It's not really my, it's your position to say."

"He didn't want to talk about Marco Rubio because he didn't want to get in between the media and Marco Rubio," Matthews observed a few moments later.

For his part, when asked minutes later by NBC's Katy Tur about Rubio, Trump again refused to take the bait, noting, "I have a very good relationship with Marco."

NBC's Jackson, Tur Try, Fail to Get Trump to Say Rubio Hurt in ABC Debate

Here's the transcript:

MSNBC Special edition of Hardball February 6, 2016; 11:12 p.m. Eastern graphic: Trump Reacts to Tonight's GOP Debate

HALLIE JACKSON, NBC News: Who do you think, of your rivals, underperformed tonight, Mr. Trump.

DONALD TRU MP: "Well, I know who they're all saying underperformed on the Internet, and I know the, your coworkers are all saying -

JACKSON: You've already checked your Twitter?

TRUMP: They've all told me. But I don't want to say, I mean, you'll see. But they say I performed very well, so, that's what matters.

JACKSON: Besides you, who won the debate tonight?

TRUMP: I think, I just don't want to say. I mean, I do have a feeling as to who did well, who did poorly, a couple of them did poorly, but, I really don't, it's your position to say.

JACKSON: You're passing on sort of [unintelligible]

TRUMP: It really is.

11:26 p.m. Eastern graphic: Trump Reacts to Tonight’s GOP Debate

TRUMP: Morning Joe and Mika and everybody are saying we won easily. And that was very cool. They just tweeted it out: Trump killed it tonight.

I think it was very important that I do that. I wanted to do very well tonight.

KATY TUR, NBC News: And how'd you feel about Marco Rubio's performance? He got hit pretty hard by Gov. Christie.

TRUMP: Well, he's being hit very hard on the Twitter. And, I dunno, I mean, I don't want to comment on anybody else's performance because I actually, I have a very good relationship with Marco. But I don't want to comment on his performance. He's being hit pretty hard.

Woman+Youth Vs 2 old white guys? not good visual.
Newt could be chief of staff, or liaison with congress.

The one combination I would NEVER vote for is Kasich anything (even in the V.P. slot)!

[jw] "Trump could do worse than Rubio as VP pick."

[mouse1] The last thing I want is "MR Gang of 8" Marco Rubio one heart beat away from the presidency

Trump needs Cruz on the ticket to reconcile the base, the conservatives who are not fooled by Rubio's belated pretend-conservative positions.

Trump, if nominated, must not make the mistake Ronald Reagan made when he did his deal with Bush 41 to reconcile the Big Money. Bush got big patronage and used it to put his people in key positions and basically take over the Reagan Administration, isolating and competitively (NOT cooperating) freezing the Reaganauts out of policy and administration.

George Bush did a creeping coup d' etat within the Reagan Administration, to the extent that Ronnie's second term was basically Bush's first -- and the People knew it. The Reagan Administration at the end was overrun by the nasty Chamber types who have been hanging around Yeb!, and if Trump goes with Rubio, those same faces are going to show up around Rubio (like, Karl Rove, for instance) and crawl all over Trump's act, turning it into a fourth Bush term (fifth, counting Reagan's second).

The dirty tricks campaign by Cruz would cost Trump his reputation and integrity. Why would he take on that burden after self-financing?

Rubio isn't a monster on the invasion of the US, that tag belongs to Jeb and Kasich. Rubio wants a solution and is coming around to realize that nothing changes until the border is secure and people trust the gov to keep out illegals.

Not to worry, Rubio stays on script, and Trump will hand him a new script that says no amnesty. That will be Rubio's concession to get the Trump VP spot, and 8 years as VP.

But see my last. Put Rubio on the ticket, and 10 minutes later Karl Rove and 50 professional "consultants" show up and mob the action and take everything over. Count on it -- they're The Money's guys, they work for The Money, The Money's name be praised.

Trump might as well sign his whole thing away, if he brings in Rubio or Yeb! or any of the Yacht Club favorites.

And forget the "no amnesty". Even if they carve it on the Lincoln Memorial during the campaign, it's dead the minute the winning votes are in, the e-GOP will take it out back and slit its throat.

You cannot let the e-GOP into your campaign, no matter who you are or how independent you think you are. The Manor Bush are master manipulators and opportunists. They poached on Ronnie and they'll poach on Donald Trump. Count on it.

How do you know that Trump is not a pretend-conservative, considering his track record?

Good point. I think he is a "pretend-conservative", but the post I was answering posited, as a premise, that Trump would get the nomination, and that he would then need an appropriate running-mate.

So I accepted the premise, as I would accept the outcome of a Trump win of the nomination, and went with the scenario.

Rubio wants a solution and is coming around to realize that nothing changes until the border is secure and people trust the gov....

At least he's finally coming around, like the Titanic came slowly around, but I think it's only because people, the voters, are hammering it into the space between his eyes.

Rubio is still an e-GOP "operative" in his primary orientation. Our problem is that the e-GOP has got markers out everywhere, and they are determined to cash them for open borders and wage-breaking green-card immigration and offshoring tax breaks.

I'm with you right now.

It occurs to me that, just comparing experience and competencies, that it would be a better "fit" if Trump got the presidential nomination (despite his big warts) and the executive job, and Sen. Cruz got the veepship and the presidency of the Senate. Patronage and policy accommodations could be made that conservatives would like, while their man matures and prepares for his own presidential run in four or eight years, following Dick Nixon and George Bush (41).

It's a thought.

I had to laugh a while ago when Gretchen Carlson played a clip of Donald Trump telling Jeb Bush to hush. Jeb was interrupting him while he was talking.
