Back in October, we previewed the âpromisedâ battle for Aleppo, Syriaâs largest city prior to the war.
By the time Russia began constructing an air base at Latakia, the city - which is immensely important both from a strategic and psychological perspective - was controlled by a hodgepodge of rebels and militants including al-Qaeda, the Free Syrian Army, and ISIS.
As we noted four months ago, if Russia and Hezbollah manage to recapture the city, it would effectively restore the Assad government in Syria even if the east of the country is still controlled by Islamic State.
In many ways, the city is emblematic of the wider conflict. Here are a few visuals which underscore the extent of the desolation and utter sorrow that plague this once thriving urban center.

About ISIS:
“Pretty much (the Russians) are planning an extermination campaign of ISIS held territory. Every man woman and child in it will be killed unless they flee through checkpoints. Pretty much what the Russian army did to Grozny.”
John Kerry and Obama are most heart broken.
Negotiations have broken down and so Kerry says Russia should stop bombing to get them to come back. Guess he never heard of Linebacker II and of that massive bombing bringing the North Vietnamese running back to the table in Paris.
Also, the “negotiations” are a farce. The EU and our government has decided that Assad must leave. The only thing being “negotiated” is the mechanics of Assad leaving. And Assad has no intention of leaving, so the negotiations are at an impasse the moment they begin.
Finally, the rebels refuse to participate until government sieges of rebel-held towns were lifted and bombings, which continued on Friday, were halted. So they will only negotiate if we first assure they are not defeated on the battlefield. A bizarre concept overall.
He missed Grozny as well ...
