Two Generals in the military have come forward to say that women should now have to register for the draft, as the Defense Department has opened up combat jobs to women. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley agreed that the current policy, which requires only males register for the Selective Service System, should be changed after restrictions that barred women from trying out for combat jobs were lifted last year. "Every American who's physically qualified should register for the draft," said Neller at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Tuesday.
"I think that all eligible and qualified men and women should register for the draft," Milley added. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Army Acting Secretary Patrick Murphy didn't go quite as far, but did think the issue should be opened up for a national debate. "This needs to be looked at as part of a national debate, given the changed circumstances," said Mabus...

It is the Politically Correct thing to do.
So, it is the obligation of veterans and our elected leaders to educate people on this issue -- to stand up and scream from the heavens when something stupid like this is about to happen. By linking women in combat MOS's with draft registration, these two generals have given us that wedge issue to get peoples' attention.
The old "well, you wanted it, you got it" routine can be satisfying. The problem is that ones who pay the price -- perhaps even with their lives -- are those who still serve in those combat MOS's.
We owe it to them to keep this fight going.
“Let me get this straight...you fine with your 18 year old daughters being forced into military service with the potential of being in a Combat Arms position?”
No, I didn’t say that. I said if they want to vote, they should have to sign up for selective service.
If they would rather not be put in that kind of danger, they should be able to simply disenfranchise themselves instead.
A smile is coming to my face as I imagine the dozens of sad stories from women denied student loans over this. It would be one of the biggest "oh crap!" face palms from female legislators, such as DiFi, Swishy Pants, or Fauxcahontas as they breathlessly intone, "we never intended for this to happen." I'm sure Kelly Ayotte will jump across the aisle to support her sisters.
Oh, the schadenfreude of it all! I still say the odds are slim to none.
I see what you are saying. ;-) Your suggestion might solve the voting problems we have had since 1992
I’ll answer this, though it’s all hypothetical, as I don’t have kids.
1. No, I would not be fine with it. However,
2. This NIMBY attitude is part of the reason why we end up in these screwed up situations.
If the same people who feel so passionately about the potential for their daughters to get drafted poured that energy into protesting women in combat / infantry roles, perhaps this wouldn’t even be a subject for debate.
Regarding women in Combat roles, upwards of 90% of females in the military object to being in combat roles. My experience is that similar numbers in society in general feel the same way. Much of the fundamental transformation (i.e. women in combat, transsexuals, etc.) is being done by fiat...
Exactly. There are real women going to be adversely impacted by this insanity who had nothing to do with it. And it is a damn embarrassment that none of our Republican leaders stood up to be counted on this issue.
I may try giving Medved or someone a call today so see if they're start asking GOP candidates for their position on the issue. Maybe Hewitt -- I think I can get through to him.
Never understood how those bulls are. they hate men and yet try to look like a man. The woman with her is supposed to like women and yet goes with a woman trying to look like a guy.
And these people tell me this is not a mental illness.
Great idea! If people like Rush, Levin, Medved, and others make this an issue, it may get traction!
The women in Combat Arms debate has been going on for quite some time.
99% of the women refused to comment.
It sucks to be given the opportunity to weigh-in on a decision and not take it and then get caught in the problem.
Live and learn, I guess.
Welcome to the Infantry, ladies!
Wonder if rent in Canada will go up?
Chickens do wonder
Try there. . .
You probably did not ask for President Obama either, but you got him.
Now, I'm wondering if that mid 1970s era registration is still recorded someplace in the government archives or if it made its way to the round file sometime way back when.
When you cherry-pick from hand selected political suck asses you can get whatever answer you want.
Then the women who didn’t support the push by the feminists should have stood up and argues against the feminists. But they didn’t. I would also disagree with your statement that it is “punishment” to require someone to register to possibly serve their country. Nothing says they will be called to serve just like it is for men. And, if called to serve, they don’t have to serve in the combat jobs. So, appears we have a fundamental difference of opinion regarding whether women should be required to serve their country — just like men. To me, equality means equality in all ways, not just the “good” things that they want.
The other three knuckled under without a peeo., and actually said they thought it was a good idea.
But maybe that doesn't bother you.
