Amazon plans to open 300-400 bookstores, says mall company CEO

(Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc is planning to open hundreds of brick-and-mortar bookstores, the head of a major U.S. mall operator said.

Such an expansion, which Amazon itself has not confirmed, would position the world's No. 1 online retailer as a competitor to booksellers such as Barnes & Noble Inc. At present, Amazon operates a single bookstore in its home city, Seattle.

"You've got Amazon opening brick-and-mortar bookstores and their goal is to open, as I understand, 300 to 400 bookstores," Sandeep Mathrani, chief executive of General Growth Properties Inc, said on Tuesday.

That could be but why should I care if they have a book delivery outlet? I have Prime and it saves me a lot on free shipping because I buy a lot of stuff (most non-book) from them.

Based on what I buy, Prime is a real deal for me. And I don’t have to drive anywhere. BTW, prices are certainly competitive for a lot of things I buy.

It seems like they are probably more for promotion and advertising than pure retail.

Big mistake. Just when readers are switching from hard copies to e-books? Doesn’t make sense.

Not sure if it’s genius or hubris.

Only time will tell.

A lot of people still want ‘hold in their hands’ books.

I buy about two books a week on average. I always go to the local B&N to peruse books before I download them to my Nook. Sometimes I find an old fashioned print book - like an illustrated Cervantes or the like - that I just want to enjoy by flipping pages. Some physical books are just gorgeous.

I’ve been reading off my kindle for years now. Love that it takes up no space. I have a room full of books I need to unload some day.

I see it as a delivery outlet.

Ding ding ding, the potential for having such stores as drop of locations for other products is what I see also.

Why?

It just struck me. Landing pads for delivery drones.

And I'm not kidding...at least by much.

I see it as a delivery outlet.

Safe drop zones for those that don't trust delivery in their area with all the porch snatching going on.

As long as they pay $15.00 per hour at a minimum it’s ok - otherwise Bezos is a capitalist and not the socialist he like to make himself out to be.

Submitted for your approval...

Wouldn’t buy from Amazon if I had to. They support PP and abortion.

The local Barnes and Noble has very few books in it anymore. Literally. If I ever go there (once or twice a year) and I find a book I like I go online and buy a used one for one penny plus $3.99 shipping from Amazon.

The only thing I can think of is eventually you can pick up your merchandise there instead of paying for shipping.

Then used books will no longer be a penny though, of course.

Heh heh... mall space... lot of vacant mall space, gas is cheap, retail is gonna bounce, lock in leases when they're low... yeah, Amazon is dooooomed.

In recent years, B&N has been shifting their business model away from total reliance on books and magazines. They now stock a lot of toys, games, and curiosities, and have cut way back on music. I don’t know if it’s working.

Good for your daughter. My grandsons always loved going to our local B&N and started them both off at an early age. We also went to the library once a week and usually came out with a pile to read. Now they are older and books cost more but that’s okay.

I’ve noticed that the in-store price of CDs at B&N is way higher than their on-line price, sometimes as much as 100% higher.
