Byron York: Trump debate dodge fuels doubts, boosts Cruz
Washington Examiner ^ | January 27, 2016 | Byron York

BLOOMFIELD, Iowa - James and Brooks Schooley are raising a young family in this tiny Iowa community. They support Ted Cruz and brought their kids to an old church near the Bloomfield town square to hear the candidate, along with Iowa Rep. Steve King and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

The Schooleys like Cruz's faith and his fealty to the Constitution. But their choice is also shaped by their wariness of the Republican front-runner, Donald Trump.

"He's not principled," James Schooley told me, referring to Trump. "He just goes by emotion."

"I feel like he doesn't stick to the Constitution the way Ted Cruz would," added Brooks. "Once you go away from that, then where's your standard? I mean, you can do anything."...

If a Cruz talks on Fox and nobody sees, does he make a sound ....?

A total misdirection of what I said. Weiner embarrassed himself, got huge publicity for it and his political career self-destructed. Enter Trump and this disastrous debate decision.

Hah we'll find out about that soon enough.

This will give low energy Jeb more time to speak, any audience will be in REM sleep by 9:15.

I've actually had a mini-epihany of sorts in that I finally see the “conservatve movement” for what it really is, an abject failure. A bunch of idealogs who care more about their precious “principles” than in actually accomplishing anything of value for their country,

And this is how a carnival-barking con artist kills the conservative movement. It's absolutely stunning to me that people are willing to abandon their bedrock principles so readily for this bullying blowhard. I hope your principles were weak to begin with. Otherwise, this country is in more danger from Trump than I thought.

Cruz has been an enormously successful voice for the conservative movement, calling out the RINO establishment at every turn. We finally have a solid chance to launch a conservative revolution with him and one greedy, self-promoting developer steps in and is poised to destroy it all. He may in fact be a Democrat plant. And maybe the reason Trump didn't run in 2008 is because he saw Romney would be a successful designated loser to keep the Democrat in power. This cycle, he saw that a conservative could win and had to stop it by throwing the election to a Democrat himself.

Just exactly how do you separate “principles” from “accomplishing something of value?” Which principles are the ones we need to abandon in order to achieve “value” and why?

“Which principles are the ones we need to abandon in order to achieve “value” and why?”

The one’s where you say one set of things to get elected and the other set that are how you really want to govern! I guess is the one priciple that seems to be routinely abandoned is the “principle of the truth.” These 22 odd “conservatives” on NR all have big horns” but none are equipped with the requisite “drive shafts” to see to it that their “adherents” actually perform. When we give a “conservative” our vote, it’s with the expectation that they will do what they told us they “Washington System” is rigged against them at the outset, but most of them seem to “settle in” and become a part of the system almost from their first day in office.

Then you need a refresher. Reagan lost Iowa for not showing up at the debate in Iowa, so he took the initiative of organizing one in New Hampshire. When to Bush to ask him split the cost. Bush defined. had to include other candidates, so Reagan paid for the whole deal. That’s why he got his Irish up when some moderator tried to cut him off. He HAD paid for the damned mike. Reagan was genial but he was also a big guy who rather enjoyed a fight. If you an find a clip of the incident, look at his eyes. Not to be trifled with.

Point is, IA didn’t cost Reagan much at all.

But was Reagan already leading Iowa by 7-11 points five days out?

Great analogy! Hope we’ll have a Christopher Hitchens to expose him.

He did? When did these shockwaves happen? How many of his colleagues did he convince? How long did he shut down the government?

Oh, wait. Nothing happened. No one was convinced. He was branded as a malcontent who couldn’t lead a starving man to an all you can eat buffet. Is that the shockwave?

Reagan had been the front runner for some time and when he lost it took the steam out of his engine. Which he was so eager to have a debate in NH. and play for it out of his own pocket. The Bush camp tried to avoid it but once Reagan said he was willing to pay he more or less had to go along. I forget the others there.

Yup. The voters know that all real men who defend themselves regarding hostile debate situations are unstable.

“I am paying for this microphone!”

Erratic, seemingly impulsive behavior does not play well with voters. "That is something people do not want to see in a president," said the Cruz aide. "It makes them nervous."

And it damn well should!
