For days Trump had been calling Kelly "biased" and claiming she shouldn't be allowed to moderate the debate.
After Trump taunted Kelly in an Instagram video and polled his Twitter followers about whether he should skip the debate, Ailes, the powerful chairman of Fox News and a longtime friend of Trump's, signed off on this snarky statement:

Cruz could have stayed above the fray this time, a token of true statesmanship. TOTAL fail.
He was my #2 choice, too.
He’s showing that he leads, and that he’s not led.
He’s not beholden to Fox News. He’ll win the debate without even going. And he certainly won’t stand for being set up for a “gotcha”.
The whole point of Trump’s popularity is that he doesn’t play establishment games, which Fox News is part of.
Politically rudderless.
Trump is like a box of chocolates.
Regardless, Trump will declare victory and show up on Thursday.
I don’t think either side should back down. Their agendas are at odds, and both have reputations/images to preserve.
