It's well known that many Republicans in Washington do not like Sen. Ted Cruz, but the full extent of that antipathy is coming to light this week as several current and former lawmakers say they prefer Donald Trump as the GOP nominee, although they have little regard for either man.
Some GOP consultants and strategists started the rumblings in recent days. Then Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad told Republicans in his state to oppose Cruz because of the senator's opposition to ethanol subsidies.
But the story broke wide open on Wednesday when former Senate Majority Leader and 1996 Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole said he would choose Trump over Cruz, going so far as to say a Cruz nomination would be "cataclysmic" for the Republican Party. Another former GOP Senate leader, Trent Lott, has said the same.
But Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, a Cruz supporter, is not swayed. While honoring Dole for his heroism in World War II, Gohmert told WND and Radio America many mainstream Republicans are worried about what a President Cruz would mean for them.
"You don't get any more establishment than Bob Dole and Trent Lott," Gohmert said. "So they're going to be an indication of where the establishment will go. They have more belief that Trump will make deals with them and that Ted Cruz will continue to stand on principle, as he has been."
-snip-
Gohmert believes the venom in the GOP is a result of Ted Cruz doing something most other politicians don't.
"If you're a person that's interested in lying or you're interested in twisting the truth or you're interested in breaking your promises that you made to get elected, then you're not going to care for Ted Cruz," Gohmert said.

Bingo!
Trump insisted he would not sign the pledge regarding a party switch if he didn't get the nomination. What did he do to pander to the establishment? He signed.
Trump sang all the praises of Ben Carson until he started closing in the polls, then attacked him over his autobiography, diverting attention away from issues that exposed Trump's weaknesses.
Trump praised Ted Cruz over and again, and now bragged that the warrantless attacks on Cruz were because of closing the gap in the polls.
Everyone should recognize that Trump has done the same to all his Democrat "friends" like the Clintons, Obama, and others he has stated were "great" or "outstanding".
If he is willing to turn on a dime to pander to special interest groups or the latest polling, how can you take his word that he won't turn on you as well once in power?
Already, even before the primary has actually started, I believe you have insulted every Conservative serving in the House, Senate, and retired folks, as well as every conservative talking head, writer, blogger, and perhaps some that have not yet been born.
That is quite a accomplishment!
Carry on.....
Finally one shows up and he is rejected...I remember another man who was also rejected by the masses and was crucified......a Principled man who did no wrong.
Cruz makes many of the GOPe look like Democrats. That is why they hate him so much.
Ian Fleming, Casino Royale
If these same establishment hacks attacked the Democrats the way they attack Cruz, there would be no problem with Cruz.
Even with my own reservations about Trump, I think he will almost certainly be better than the Democrat alternative.>>>>
agreed and favor trump but would support cruz.
the pres gets to do about three things
Close the border period
decrease tax burden of our nation
reduce regulation
if he can defeat common core which is a plague on future generations
the rest can happen next go round.

That’s what we’re hoping for bobby boy- Get all you stinkin good fer nuthin rinos out of there! You and your ilk have ruined the party!
I'll see your Corker Bill and raise you one Single-Payer Health Care and one "Very Pro-Choice."
Hank
How do we know Trump would really build the wall if he were to win? What if he changes his mind as he so often does?
If ideology or philosophy has nothing to do with it, how do we know he really intends to build a wall in the first place?
So there you have it.
My only hope is that I've stumbled onto the wrong web site.
Hank
Yep. And the Cruz people want to get water.
The Trumpanzees, gasoline.
Hank
And under the bus he goes!
When Trump’s President he needs to put Cruz on the Supreme Court...
I reject your raise.
No one has answered my question yet.
Whatever Trump said about single payer health care and very pro choice does not put 150 billion dollars plus interest into the hands of islamist terrorists, nor does it facilitate their getting nuclear warheads, nor does it allow Republicans to pretend that they are against any of it.
Try again.
When Cruz becomes President he needs to put Trump in charge of building his Yuge wall, with a small small door.
No, they just want to pat themselves on the back for their ten and two perfection on their way to handing out Teddy Bears.
Because it’s his platform. When the other guys have their banning trial in the British Parliament we will start taking them seriously on Immigration too.
